Integrated field-based learning in the form of a navigation game

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá využitím orientačního běhu jako prostředku ke zlepšení výuky geografie/zeměpisu ve školním prostředí. Cílem práce je představit integrovaný přístup k terénní výuce, který kombinuje navigační hru s výukou geografických konceptů. Teoretická část práce se věnuje návrhu konceptu terénní výuky metodou navigační hry založené na konceptu orientačního běhu, zdůrazňující výhody a výzvy spojené s terénní výukou. Praktická část práce popisuje návrh a realizaci terénních aktivity, konkrétně navigační hry, které propojují orientační běh s geografickým vzděláváním. Výzkum byl proveden na vzorku žáků 9. ročníku ZŠ, a 1. ročníku SŠ, kteří se účastnili realizace navigační hry. Kvalitativní a kvantitativní metody byly použity k vyhodnocení účinnosti této inovativní výukové metody. Výsledky ukazují pozitivní dopad integrované terénní výuky na motivaci studentů, jejich schopnost zapojit se do týmové spolupráce a praktickou aplikaci geografických znalostí v reálném prostředí. Diskuse se zaměřuje na přínosy a omezení této metody v rámci školního vzdělávacího systému a nabízí doporučení pro budoucí implementaci. Celkově lze konstatovat, že integrace navigační hry do výuky geografie/zeměpisu představuje inovativní přístup k terénní výuce, který podporuje aktivní participaci studentů a rozvíjí praktické dovednosti nezbytné pro porozumění geografickým konceptům v reálném světě.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the use of orienteering as a means to improve the teaching of geography/geography in a school environment. The aim of the thesis is to present an integrated approach to field education, which combines a navigation game with the teaching of geographical concepts. The theoretical part of the work is devoted to the design of the field teaching concept using the navigation game method based on the concept of orienteering, emphasizing the advantages and challenges associated with field teaching. The practical part of the thesis describes the design and implementation of field activities, specifically navigation games that connect orienteering with geographical education. The research was conducted on a sample of pupils in the 9th year of primary school and 1st year of secondary school who participated in the implementation of the navigation game. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to evaluate the effectiveness of this innovative teaching method. The results show the positive impact of integrated field teaching on students' motivation, their ability to engage in teamwork and the practical application of geographical knowledge in a real environment. The discussion focuses on the benefits and limitations of this method within the school education system and offers recommendations for future implementation. Overall, the integration of a navigation game into geography/geography teaching represents an innovative approach to field education that encourages active student participation and develops the practical skills necessary to understand geographic concepts in the real world.
