Japanism in the European Visual Culture at the 2nd half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá vlivem japanismu ve výtvarné kultuře v 2. polovině 19. století a počátku 20. století. Tomuto proudu předcházelo zrušení izolace Japonska a následné vyvážení japonských dřevotisků, které byly v uměleckých kruzích velmi oblíbené. Úvod práce je zaměřen na historii navazování kontaktů západního světa s Japonskem. Další části porovnávají, jakým způsobem se nechávali evropští malíři tímto stylem inspirovat a jaké mělo japonské umění dopad na jejich tvorbu. Vliv japanismu je velmi zřejmý v dílech Jamese Abbot McNeill Whistlera, Vincenta van Gogha, Aubreyho Vincenta Beardsleyho, Ferdinanda Hodlera, Henri de Toulouse-Lautreca a Gustava Klimta. Uvedení umělci jsou v práci zařazeni s ohledem na charakteristické znaky jejich děl, jež vykazují inspiraci východním uměním. Japanismus byl určitým prostředkem pro avantgardní tvůrce, kteří se chtěli vymanit z šablon akademismu. Japonské dřevotisky byly pro tyto umělce vítaným zdrojem, z něhož mohli čerpat nové nápady. Charakteristické prvky japonského obrazného umění (linie, ornament, dekor) se staly součástí výtvarných postupů některých západních malířů. Aplikace typických prvků japonského umění, které západní tvůrci použili, se staly stěžejními při vzniku secesních plakátů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with influence of japanism on the visual arts in the second half of the 19th century and the beginnig of the 20th century. This trend was preceded by annulment of an isolation of Japan followed by export of the Japanese woodprints, which were favourite by in the artistic circles. The introduction of thesis is aimed at history of making contacts between the west world and Japan. The next parts compares how European artists got inspired with this style and how the style affected their creation. The influence of japanism is apparent in the production of James Abbot McNeill Whistler, Vincent van Gogh, Aubrey Vincent Beardsley, Ferdinand Hodler, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Gustav Klimt. The mentioned artists were inserted into the thesis due to the characteristic attributes of their works, which shows the inspiration of the art of the East. Japanism was means of expression for artists of avant-garde, which wanted to abandon the master form of academic art. The Japanese woodprints represented the welcomed source of new ideas for the artists. The characteristic elements of the Japanese visual arts (line, dekoration, decor) became a component of art action of some western artists. The usage of the typical elements of Japanese designs, used by the western artists, became essential in the course of creation of posters in art noveau.
