Mosko-Strom: The Whirlwind of Great Metropolises (1933) by Rosa Arciniega: A Dystopian Novel?

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the novel Mosko-Strom: The Whirlwind of the Great Metropolises (1933) by Rosa Arciniega. The first chapter of the thesis discusses the life of the Peruvian writer Rosa Arciniega, describing her literary and social-political career. The second chapter studies the term dystopia, its history, concept, and elements that are demonstrated and described in dystopian works such as the novel We (1924) by the author Yevgeny Ivanovich Zamyatin, the novel Brave New World (1931) by the author Aldous Huxley, and the film Metropolis (1927) by the director Fritz Lang. He also compares the aforementioned novels by Mosko-Strom: The Whirlwind of the Great Metropolises (1933) and Brave New World (1931), their similarities and differences. The last part analyses Mosko-Strom's novel, The Whirlwind of the Great Metropolises (1933), its title, the meaning of the narrative, the characters, and themes such as the critique of technology, the industrialization, the crisis of the family, the loneliness, the absence of life goals and the dehumanization. Finally, it addresses the question of whether or not this novel belongs to the dystopian genre, as it is often called, by analyzing the dystopian elements.

Táto bakalárska práca sa zaoberá analýzou novely Mosko-Strom: El torbellino de las grandes metrópolis (1933) od autorky Rosy Arciniegy. Prvá časť bakalárskej práce opisuje život peruánskej spisovateľky Rosy Arciniegy, približuje jej literárnu ale aj politicko-sociálnu kariéru. Druhá časť skúma pojem dystópia, jej históriu, koncept a prvky, ktoré sú ďalej preukázateľné a opísané v dystopických dielach ako: novela My (1924) od autora Jevgenija Ivanoviča Zamjatina, novela Prekrásny nový svet (1931) od autora Aldousa Huxleyho a film Metropolis (1927) od režiséra Fritza Langa. Taktiež v tejto časti porovnáva spomínané novely Mosko-Strom: El torbellino de las grandes metrópolis (1933) a Prekrásny nový svet (1931), ich podobnosti a rozdielnosti. V poslednej časti rozoberá samotnú novelu Mosko-Strom: El torbellino de las grandes metrópolis (1933), jej názov, význam rozprávania, postavy a témy, ako sú napríklad kritika technológií, industrializácia, kríza rodiny, samota, absencia životne dôležitých cieľov a dehumanizácia. V poslednom rade sa zaoberá otázkou, či táto novela je alebo nie je dystópiou, ktorá sa takto tituluje, na základe rozboru dystopických prvkov.
