A Rhysian Portrait: Development of Female Characters in the Selected Novels by Jean Rhys

Abstract:

Jean Rhys je spisovatelkou dvacátého století, v jejíchž románech se odráží především její Karibské kořeny. Vzhledem k tomu, že ve své tvorbě čerpá ze svých vlastních zkušeností, její ženské postavy nesou známky post-imperialistické a postkoloniální doby: jsou pasivní, trpí pocity odcizení, nejsou schopné začlenit se do společnosti a mají obviňující sklony. Cílem mé práce je najít společné rysy postav z pera Jean Rhysové ve vybraných románech, a to Quartet, After Leaving Mr Mackenzie, Good Morning, Midnight, Voyage in the Dark and Wide Sargasso Sea. Tyto rysy jsou výsledkem jak vnějších, tak vnitřních vlivů, které na hrdinky působily. V práci poukazuji na fakt, že ačkoliv doba po zrušení otroctví a koloniálního uspořádání Britského impéria měla nezanedbatelný vliv na formování identity hrdinek Rhysové, nelze opomenout ani mentální a psychologické predispozice postav, které se následně rozvinuly po šoku z imigrace do Anglie. Vývoj postav Rhysové v románech vykazuje určitý vývoj: hrdinka v Quartetu se potýká v obrovské míře se sebelítostí, vztekem, nenávistí a pocity osamění. Tyto rysy postupně mizí směrem k románu Wide Sargasso Sea a jsou nahrazovány četnými vzpomínkami na dětství strávené v Karibiku. Předpokládám, že s přibývajícím věkem byla Jean Rhys schopná čelit své minulosti s odstupem a smířit se s obtížným vyrůstáním ve stínu své chladné matky, s dobou, která ji zásadně ovlivnila, a dosáhnout sebepřijetí, které vložila do své hrdinky Antoinetty v mistrovském dílu Wide Sargasso Sea.

Abstract:

Jean Rhys is a mid-twentieth century novelist whose fiction was particularly influenced by her origins of the Caribbean island of Dominica. Since she inserted much of her experience into her female protagonists, they in majority bear the signs of post-imperialism and post-colonialism, such as passivity, alienation, non-conformity and anger. In the thesis, I intend to demonstrate the typical traits of Rhysian heroines in Rhys’s selected novels, i.e. Quartet, After Leaving Mr Mackenzie, Good Morning, Midnight, Voyage in the Dark and Wide Sargasso Sea that result from both external and internal aspects with which the protagonists come to terms: I intend to prove that although the post-imperial world order in which Rhys experienced her childhood and which she inserted into her fiction had an inconsiderable influence on the depiction of Rhysian heroines, so did the psychology of the heroines. Moreover, the mental issues of the heroines, which include uncontrollable anger, self-pity, and inability to defend themselves, were probably amplified by the shock of moving into an inhospitable cold England. I also suggest that the development of Rhysian characters reveal certain patterns: first of all, from Quartet to Wide Sargasso Sea the extent of self-pity, rage, hatred, and isolation retreats, whilst at the same time the recollections of the Caribbean appear in the novels more intensely. I suppose that as Rhys was getting older, she was gradually capable of observing her past from different point of view, with more self-reflection, so that finally Wide Sargasso Sea through Antoinette she reaches reconciliation with her fate and herself.
