Loudness war phenomenon in terms of social functions and technologies of sound and music

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá problémy fenoménu Loudness war. Loudness war je důsledkem rivality nahrávacích společností vedené názorem, že se hlasitější hudba prodává více než ta, která je potichu. Tento bludný kruh závisti hlasitosti dal původ fenoménu posledních padesát let negativně ovlivňujícím svět hudby. Mým cílem je shrnout tuto problematiku, vysvětlit její vznik a popsat její dopady na společnost a hudební průmysl. Zároveň se pokouším nastínit možná řešení, jak se s tímto fenoménem vypořádat.

Abstract:

This paper concerns the problems of the Loudness war phenomenon. Loudness war is the result of the rivalry amongst record labels, driven by the belief that louder music sells better than the quiet one. This vicious circle of loudness envy gave rise to a phenomenon that have had negative influence on the music world for the last fifty years. My aim is to describe this issue explaining its origins and the impact on society and music industry, while trying to propose possible ways how to deal with this phenomenon.
