The Influence of Benedictines from Rajhrad upon the Life in the Medieval Neighbourhood Village

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřuje na konkrétní příklad soužití oficiálního křesťanského náboženství v podobě rajhradských benediktinských mnichů a lidových vrstev obyvatelstva zdejší farnosti. Jako výchozí pramen slouží vybrané rukopisy rajhradských benediktinů uložené v Moravské zemské knihovně, na jejichž základě si práce všímá některých jevů souvisejících s problematikou kontaktu a interakce „normativního“ a „žitého“ náboženství. Zejména se jedná o problém komunikace obou vrstev společnosti, kterou komplikuje nejen jazyková bariéra, ale i další faktory související s nesnadnou adaptací křesťanského náboženství na venkově, kde stále přežívají některé tradiční víry a praktiky z předkřesťanské doby. Dále si práce všímá středověkého církevního kalendáře v kontrastu s tradičním vnímáním času agrární společností skrze přírodní cykly, což je pozorováno na základě čtrnácti rajhradských kalendárií ve středověkých rukopisech. Další oblastí zájmu práce je písemná produkce dochovaná v Rajhradu a související s pronikáním národního jazyka do dominantního latinského textu, což je obrazem potřeby vzájemné komunikace mezi klérem a laiky. V neposlední řadě se práce soustřeďuje na kult světců jakožto typický příklad prolínání oficiální a lidové křesťanské víry, jehož konkrétním regionálním příkladem je úcta prokazovaná poustevníku Vintíři. Z práce vyplývá, že ve středověku nedocházelo pouze k jednostrannému působení představitelů křesťanské církve na obec věřících, ale vliv byl vzájemný a církev přejímala od lidových vrstev určité prvky zbožnosti, které pak skrze vštěpování křesťanské víry zase lidem navracela v oficiální podobě.

Abstract:

The work is focused on the concrete example of coexistence of the official Christian religion represented by Benedictines of Rajhrad and of the ordinary level of inhabitants of resident parish. As the basic source the chosen manuscripts of the Benedictines of Rajhrad stored in the Moravian Library are used. In the basis of them the work is noting some phenomenon connected with problems of contact and interaction of “normative” and “lived” religion. Mainly it is the problem of communication of both social levels, which is complicated not only by the language barrier, but also by other factors connected with difficult adaptation of Christianity in the countryside, where some traditional believes and practices from the pre-Christian epoch are still living. Further the work deals with the medieval Church calendar in contrast with the traditional conception of time perceived by the agricultural society through the natural cycles, what is examined in fourteen calendars from Rajhrad from the Middle Ages. The scriptural production preserved in Rajhrad and connected with national language entering the dominant Latin text, what is the symbol of the need for reciprocal communication between seculars and clergy, is the next matter of interest of the work. Last but not least the work is focused on the cult of saints as a typical example of the diffusion of official and popular Christian Believe; the concrete regional example is the cult of the eremite Vintir. It results from the work that in the Medieval Ages did not occur only the one-sided effecting community of believers by the representatives of the Christian Church, but the influence was reciprocal and the Church took over certain items of devoutness from the ordinary levels of people, which were given back to the people by Church through infixing the Christian Believe in official way.
