The Cheeger variational problem and its applications in String theory

Abstract:

Nedávný teoretický pokrok v oblasti izoperimetrických problémů činí rychlé kroky vpřed. Mnoho současných nových výsledků se týká formulace izoperimetrického problému v kontextu vlastních čísel diferenciálních operátorů na hladkých Riemannovských varietách. Jedním ze specifických problémů je nalezení Dirichletových vlastních čísel nelineárního p-Laplaceova operátoru. Zde je možné charakterizovat první vlastní hodnotu tohoto eliptického operátoru, kdy p si limitně blíží k 1, jako takzvanou Cheegerovu konstantu. V naší práci řešíme otevřený izoperimetrický problém pro Cheegerovu konstantu zakřivených trubic na varietách s konstantní sekční křivostí, přičemž uvažujeme, že zakřivené trubice tvoří trubicovitá okolí kolem hladkých uzavřených křivek. Důkaz je založen na konexi mezi vlastními hodnotami shape operátoru na tubulárních hyperplochách a regularity průniku Cheegerovy množiny a dané zakřivené trubice. Tuto vlastnost následně zjednodušíme použitím invariance zakřivené trubice vzhledem ke škálování jejího (n-1)-rozměrného průřezu. Tento výsledek také rozšiřujeme na případ neohraničených zakřivených trubic a vznášíme hypotézu ohledně zakřivených trubic s libovolným průřezem v R^n a na varietách s konstantní sekční křivostí. V další části naší práce poukazujeme na přesah našich výsledků a Cheegerova problému obecně, ve vztahu k holografickému principu a holografické entropii v de Sitterově časoprostoru, s využitím dS-CFT duality. Kombinací těchto principů relativizujeme exaktní formu Yauovy domněnky o první vlastní hodnotě Laplaciánu na minimálních hyperplochách v S^(n+1) (1). Tato relativizace generuje novou domněnku, kterou následně dokážeme propojením zmíněných principů a specifických vlastností Cheegerovy konstanty.

Abstract:

Recent theoretical progress in the area of the isoperimetric problems takes quick steps forward. Many current new results concern the formulation of the isoperimetric problem in the context of eigenvalues of differential operators on smooth Riemannian manifolds. One of the specific problems is to find the Dirichlet eigenvalues of the nonlinear p-Laplace operator. Here it is possible to characterize the first eigenvalue of this elliptic operator, when p goes to 1 as the Cheeger constant. In our work, we solve an open isoperimetric problem for the Cheeger constant of curved tubes in space forms with constant sectional curvature, considering that the curved tubes form a tubular neighborhood about smooth closed curves. The proof is based on the connection between the eigenvalues of the shape operator on the tubular hypersurface and the regularity of the intersection of the Cheeger set and the curved tube. We subsequently simplify this property by using invariance of the curved tube with respect to the scaling of its (n-1)-dimensional cross-section. We also extend this result to the case of unbounded curved tubes and raise a question about curved tubes with arbitrary cross-section in R^n and in space forms. In the next part of our work, we point out the overlap of our results and the Cheeger problem in general, in relation to the holographic principle and the holographic entropy in de Sitter spacetime, by using the dS-CFT duality. By combining these principles, we relativize the exact form of the Yau’s conjecture on the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on the minimal hypersurfaces in S^(n+1) (1). This relativization generates a new conjecture, which then prove by linking the mentioned principles and specific properties of the Cheeger constant.
