Measurement of belief in conspiracy theories

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor´s thesis was to develop a measuring tool for conspiracist ideation in the Czech and Slovak design. For this purpose, the most important theoretical and research findings on conspiracy thinking were summarized, and on their basis was assumed that three dimensions – epistemic, existential and social motives – forms conspiracy thinking. In the next step, there were created the questionnaire items in such a way, that they captured the three dimensions most appropriately. The structure of the construct was further verified by confirmatory factor analysis. The Slovak research sample consisted of 252 respondents and the Czech sample consisted of 233 respondents. The results supported the assumption of three dimensions that are closely related to each other, forming the overall construct of conspiracy thinking. In favour of the validity of this method, there are strong correlations with belief in specific conspiracy theory and right-wing authority (RWA). Reliability in terms of internal consistency is high. The results of invariance testing indicate that the method measures in both versions in the same way, so it is also possible to compare the means of the test scores across the versions. Possibilities of further usage of the method and study limits are considered in the discussion.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto bakalárskej práce bolo vytvoriť novú metódu merajúcu konšpiračné myslenie v českej i sloven-skej verzii. Za týmto účelom boli zhrnuté najdôležitejšie teoretické a výskumné poznatky o konšpiračnom myslení a na ich základe bol vytvorený predpoklad, že za konšpiračným myslením stoja tri dimenzie – epis-temické, existenciálne a sociálne motívy. V ďalšom kroku boli vytvorené položky dotazníku takým spôsobom, aby čo nevierohodnejšie zachytili tieto tri dimenzie. Štruktúra konštruktu bola ďalej overovaná pomocou konfirmačné faktorové analýzy. Slovenskú výskumnú vzorku tvorilo 252 respondentov a českú výskumnú vzorku 233 respondentov. Výsledky podporili predpoklad troch dimenzií, ktoré spolu silne súvisia a tvoria tak celkovú škálu konšpiračného myslenia. V prospech validity tejto metódy hovoria silné korelácie s vierou v špecifické konšpiračné teórie a pravicového autoritárstva (RWA). Reliabilita v zmysle vnútornej konzistencie dosahuje vysokých hodnôt. Výsledky testovania invariancie nasvedčujú tomu, že metóda meria v oboch ver-ziách rovnakým spôsobom, vzhľadom k čomu je taktiež možné porovnávať priemery dosiahnutého testové-ho skóre naprieč verziami. Možnosti ďalšieho využitia metódy a limity štúdie sú rozobrané v diskusii.
