Operative management of colic in horses - analysis of recovery success

Abstract:

Literární přehled pojednává o anatomii a fyziologii trávicího traktu koní, dále udává stručnou charakteristiku kolikových onemocnění, jednotlivé typy kolik, příčiny kolik, vysvětluje pojem nepravých kolik a v neposlední řadě se také věnuje možnostem terapie a prevence. Praktická část analyzuje soubor pacientů, kteří byli hospitalizování v měsících leden až prosinec 2021 na klinice v Heřmanově Městci. Vstupní soubor obsahoval celkem 122 koní, u kterých byly sbírány informace o pohlaví, věku, plemeni a o době příjmu pacienta. Mezi těmito faktory byla hledána predispozice ke kolikám. Dále byla zjišťována diagnóza a zvolený způsob terapie. Došlo k porovnání úspěšnosti chirurgické a konzervativní léčby. Konzervativní terapie v podobě podání intravenózních léčiv byla zvolena u 63,93 % pacientů a byla 100% úspěšná. Chirurgickou terapii podstoupilo 18,85 % pacientů, přitom 17,39 % z nich muselo být utraceno. Celkem byla eutanázie provedena u 9,84 % koní.

Abstract:

This literature review discusses the anatomy and physiology of the equine digestive tract, gives a brief characterization of colic diseases, the different types of colic, causes of colic, explains the concept of false colic and last but not least discusses the possibilities of therapy and prevention. The practical part analyses a set of patients who were hospitalized between January and December 2021 at the clinic in Heřmanův Městec. The input file contained a total of 122 horses for which information on sex, age, breed and time of admission was collected. Among these factors, a predisposition to colic was sought. Furthermore, the diagnosis and the chosen therapy were sought. Comparison of success rates of surgical and conservative treatment was made. Conservative therapy in the form of intravenous drug administration was chosen in 63.93% of patients and was 100% successful. Surgical therapy was undergone by 18.85% of patients, while 17.39% of them had to be euthanized. In total, euthanasia was performed in 9.84% of horses.
