Visual aspects of literary metaphor

Abstract:

Metafora je nepochybně důležitou součástí umění a může často napomoci našemu porozumění mnohým uměleckým dílům. Zatímco literárním metaforám či metaforickým strukturám ve výtvarném umění je (obojímu samostatně) věnováno dost prostoru, intermediálnímu přesahu metafory mezi textem a obrazem je vyhrazeno místo spíše skromné. V koncepcích druhé poloviny dvacátého století převažuje názor o tvůrčí povaze metafory, tedy že autor užíváním metafor poskytuje jakési kognitivní itineráře recipientovi, jehož odpověď je naplňuje a dále rozvíjí. Je jistě proto na místě se problematice vizualizace literárních metafor věnovat více do hloubky, neboť právě spolupráce mezi verbální a vizuální rovinou fantazie může být jedním z pádných argumentů pro kreativní potenciál metafor. První část práce vykládá tradiční i moderní přístupy k metafoře, s důrazem na sémantické teorie, které prosazují metaforu jako tvůrce nového významu. Ve druhé části podkládá uvedené teorií metafory jako základního principu tvůrčí fantazie a výkladem jejího vizualizačního obrazotvorného potenciálu. Ve třetí části se práce zabývá teorií metafory ve výtvarném umění a následně se pokouší o interpretace a srovnání metafor v ilustracích Salvadora Dalího k Alarcónovu románu Třírohý klobouk.

Abstract:

Metaphor is undoubtedly an important ingredient of art and might often assist in our understanding of many works of art. While a lot of space is devoted to literary metaphors and metaphorical structures in the visual arts (both separately), the place reserved for the intermedia crossover of metaphor between a literary text and an image is rather modest. In the conceptions of the second half of the twentieth century prevails a view of the creative nature of metaphor that the author by using metaphors provides the reader with cognitive itineraries and his task is to fulfil them and develop them further. Since cooperation between the verbal and the visual level of the imagination might be one of the compelling arguments for the creative potential of metaphor, the issue of the visualization of metaphor is certainly significant. The first part of the thesis discusses traditional and modern approaches to metaphor with an emphasis on semantical theories that promote metaphor as the creator of a new meaning. The stated is then in the second part supported with theory considering metaphor as a basic principle of creative fantasy and with explanation of its visualization imaginative potential. Subsequently in the third part the thesis deals with theories of metaphor in fine arts and attempts to interpret and compare metaphors in illustrations by Salvador Dalí for Alarcón's novel The Three-Cornered Hat.
