Teaching Listening in Mozambique

Abstract:

Poslech a poslechové dovednosti hrají zásadní roli při osvojování mateřského i cizího jazyka, avšak na školách v Mosambiku jsou tyto metody zcela opomíjeny. Tato diplomová práce zkoumá hlavní faktory, které zapřičiňují opomíjení významu poslechových dovedností na školách v Mosambiku. Dále práce analyzuje experiment prováděný na různých mosambických školách, který spočívá ve výuce poslechových dovedností skrze podcasty. Výzkum je prováděn pomocí kvalitativní studie prostřednictvím polostrukturovaného dotazníku, analýzy zdrojů, které reflektují danou problematiku ve výuce cizího jazyka, a pomocí pokusu. Závěry ukazují, že za zanedbáváním poslechových dovedností stojí nedostatek materiálních zdrojů ve školách, nedostatky v profesním rozvoji učitelů a vynechávání poslechových aktivit z učebnic anglického jazyka a testování. Kromě toho, experiment ve výuce poslechových dovedností skrze m-learning naznačuje, že m-learning může být použit jako alternativní způsob výuky poslechových dovedností na místech, kde je nedostatek materiálních zdrojů (počítače, přehrávače), jako například v Mosambiku.

Abstract:

It has been made evident that listening has a vital importance in both first and second language learning. However, it is completely neglected at schools in Mozambique. This study investigates the key factors that contribute to the downgrading of listening comprehension skills in Mozambican schools. In addition, it analyses an experiment on teaching listening through podcasts that was conducted in various Mozambican schools. The investigation is done through a qualitative study based on a semi-structured questionnaire, analysis of different sources depicting relevant issues in second language teaching, and through an experiment. The findings demonstrate that the lack of resources in schools, lack of training on the teachers’ side, and omission of listening activities from the course books and English examinations are the key factors to the disregard of listening. Furthermore, the experiment in teaching listening comprehension skills through m-learning suggests that m-learning can be used as an alternative way of teaching listening comprehension skills in places where resources are scarce such as Mozambique
