Abstract:

Twin-width je grafový parametr, který v roce 2020 představil Bonnet at al. Neformálně řečeno, twin-width grafu měří jeho podobnost s cografy. Několik \textsf{NP}-těžkých problémů je řešitelných v \textsf{FPT}-čase při parametrizaci pomocí twin-width. Především toto zahrnuje FO-model checking. Většina (pokud ne všechny) těchto algoritmů však předpokládá, že je jim dán svědek omezené twin-width (obvykle contraction sequence). Obecně je rozhodnutí o existenci kontrakčních sekvencí dané šířky \textsf{NP}-těžké. Proto se díváme na konkrétní třídy grafů a snažíme se určit jejich twin-width. V této práci se zaměřujeme na rovinné grafy. Dáváme přehled existující výsledky o twin-width rovinných grafů. Dokážeme také podmíněný důkaz přesné horní hranice twin-width rovinných grafů tím, že nalezneme algoritmus, který počítá contraction sequence šířky nejvýše 7 pro libovolný jednoduchý rovinný graf v polynomiálním čase. Chybějící částí důkazu je analýza po případech generovaná bruteforcingem. V době, kdy odevzdávám tuto práci, program provádějící bruteforcing ještě neskončil zpracování všech případů.

Abstract:

Twin-width is a graph parameter introduced in 2020 by Bonnet at al. Informally speaking, twin-width of a graph measures its similarity to a cograph. Several \textsf{NP}-hard problems are solvable in \textsf{FPT}-time when parameterized by twin-width. Most notably, this includes first-order model checking. However, most (if not all) of these algorithms assume that a witness of bounded twin-width (usually, a contraction sequence) is given to them. In general, deciding existence of a contraction sequences of a given width is \textsf{NP}-hard. Therefore, we look at specific classes of graphs and try to determine their twin-width. In this thesis, we focus on planar graphs. We give an overview of existing results about twin-width of planar graphs. We also give a conditional proof of tight upper bound on twin-width of planar graphs by providing an algorithm that computes a contracting sequence of width at most 7 for any simple planar graph in polynomial time. The missing part of the proof is a case analysis generated by bruteforcing. By the time I am submitting this thesis, the program doing the bruteforcing has not yet finished processing all the cases.
