Enhanced properties of carbon based coatings

Abstract:

Cílem práce je příprava a charakterizace tenkých uhlíkových povlaků, zejména uhlík-nitridových vrstev a grafénu, pro jejich případné využití v oblasti elektrochemických sensorů či antikorozní ochraně medicínských implantátů. Vzhledem k obecně nedostatečné adhezi uhlíkových vrstev k podložkám, v důsledku vysoké hodnoty vnitřního pnutí, byl kladem důraz na jeho přesné měření a snížení pomocí změnou nastavení depozičních parametrů. K testování vhodnosti CNx vrstev pro jejich aplikace bylo využito potenciometrických a voltametrických elektrochemických metod. Celková charakterizace vrstev bula testována řadou metod: chemické složení (XPS, ERDA, RBS), mikrostruktura (Ramanovská spektrometrie, FTIR, XPS), povrchové vlastnosti (smáčivost, povrchová energie), poréznost (TDS) a velký důraz byl kladen na využití nízkoenergiové elektronové mikroskopie, která umožňuje studium tenkých vrstev způsobem, který přináší poznatky doposud klasickou elektronovou mikroskopií nedostupné.

Abstract:

The PhD thesis is focused on preparation, characterization and application of carbon based coatings (carbon nitride films and graphene). The first experimental part is dedicated to the elimination of high compressive stress in sputtered carbon nitride films. The addition of a defined amount of hydrogen was the best parameter of reduction of the high residual compressive stress. Nevertheless, the presence of hydrogen in the carbon nitride films can cause major changes in various films' properties. Therefore a detailed comparative study of the hydrogenated and hydrogen-free coatings was performed. The next experimental parts are focused on the application of carbon nitride films in electrochemical sensors and as a corrosion protection of medical materials. The last part of the thesis deals with the most “modern” carbon material currently - graphene. Graphene, due to its superior properties, is the most prospective “carbon candidate” for the use for various purposes. Specifically, the research focused on the use of the low voltage scanning transmission microscopy for distinguishing the number of the graphene layers.
