Analysis of unemployment in EU countries using panel data

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá ekonometrickou analýzou nezaměstnanosti států EU v letech 2007 - 2017. Cílem je vytvořit model, který dobře zachycuje dynamiku vývoje nezaměstnanosti napříč členskými státy Evropské unie. Vzhledem k povaze problému jsou využity metody odhadů speciálně navržené pro panelová data. Proměnné modelu vysvětlující vývoj míry nezaměstnanosti jsou vybrány na základě teoretických poznatků, jejichž předpokládaný vliv je diskutován. Zvolená data jsou nejprve zkoumána pro svou vhodnost ve smyslu využití při práci s panelovými daty. Je proveden odhad pomocí sdružené metody nejmenších čtverců, metody fixních efektů a metody náhodných efektů. Pomocí statistických testů a metrik, využívaných v oblasti ekonometrie, je zvolena pro analyzovaný datový soubor vhodná metoda, která je dále podrobena bližšímu zkoumání a její regresní parametry jsou podrobeny testům stability. Výsledná síla a směr vlivu jednotlivých regresorů jsou interpretovány a porovnány s teoretickým předpokladem.

Abstract:

This thesis follows up econometric analysis of unemployment in EU countries between 2007 and 2017. The aim is to construct model which can handle dynamics of unemployment across the member countries of European union. According to the structure of the problem there are used special methods of panel data modeling. The choice of independent variables of the model is based on theoretical macroeconomic knowledge about factors which influence unemployment. Expected influence of these factors is discussed. Firstly, the analysed dataset is examined from point of view of suitability for analysis in panel data models. Then pooled OLS model, fixed effect model and random effect model are estimated. With usage of statistical tests and econometric metrics the optimal model is chosen and is furthermore examined. Regression parameters of this model are tested for stability. Results of the analysis and influence of regressors are interpreted and compared with theoretical assumptions.
