Empire as an actor in the international system of the ancient Mediterranean and the Near East.

Abstract:

V této práci je nastíněna zásadní etapa perského impéria. Popisuje, jakým způsobem se periferní oblast Přední Asie stala dominantním politickým aktérem starověku. Právě to je předmětem mé práce, ve které je postupně popsán historický vývoj Perské říše a její imperiální struktura. V první části práce je popsána teorie Alexandra Motyla. Motylova teorie impéria je založena především na struktuře státního útvaru a vztahu centra s periferními oblastmi. Motyl udává několik charakteristik, které mohou vést k oslabení centrální moci daného impéria. V celé historii starověku se objevilo pouze několik říší, které dokázaly ovládnout rozlehlá území pomocí efektivní správní struktury. Prvním z těchto státních celků byla Perská říše. Peršané dokázali ovládnout oblast od povodí Indu až po území dnešního Řecka. Zároveň dokázali vytvořit imperiální strukturu, která zajistila životnost říši na příštích 200 let. Zajímavé je, že struktura této říše se podobala imperiální struktuře římského císařství, které se zrodilo za vlády císaře Augusta.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis outlines crucial stage of the Persian Empire. It discribes how the peripheral region of Near East became the dominant political actor of the ancienit times. That is the core of my thesis. Which chronologically outlines the historical evolution of the Persian Empire and its imperial structure. The first part describes the theory of Alexander Motyl. Motyls imperial theory is primarily based on the structure of state formation and relationship mainly based on the structure of state formation and relationship between core and peripheral areas. Motyl lists several characteristics that can lead to weakening of central power of given empire. In the entire history of Ancient times the´re we´re only several empires, who managed to dominate vast areas through efficient administrative structures. First of these state unit was the Persian Empire. The Persians were able to gain kontrol over the region from the Indus basin to the territory of present-day Greece. At the same time they managed to create an imperial structure that ensured durability of the whole Empire for the next 200 years. Interestingly, the structure of this Empire resembled the imperial structure of the Roman Empire, that was established during the regin of the emperor Augustus.
