Sensitivity to anxiety and motivation for driking in early and middle adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo prozkoumat motivy ke konzumaci alkoholu u mladých dospělých a dospělých ve středním věku a vztah těchto motivů k míře citlivosti vůči úzkosti a k míře zkonzumovaného alkoholu. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 231 osob, z toho 149 mladých dospělých (věkové rozmezí 18-23 let) a 82 dospělých ve středním věku (věkové rozmezí 35-50 let). Pro zjištění úrovně citlivosti vůči úzkosti a jednotlivých motivů ke konzumaci alkoholu byly administrovány dotazníky Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised a Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3, míra zkonzumovaného alkoholu byla určována na základě frekvence konzumace a zkonzumovaného množství. Nejpreferovanějším motivem ke konzumaci alkoholu u obou věkových skupin byl sociální motiv, následován motivem zlepšení nálady, copingovým motivem a motivem konformity. Mladí dospělí dosahovali u všech motivů vyšší úrovně, což je v souladu s vyšším udávaným množstvím. S mírou zkonzumovaného alkoholu korelovaly nejsilněji ze všech motivů copingový motiv a motiv zlepšení nálady. Citlivost vůči úzkosti byla v nejtěsnějším vztahu s copingovým motivem. Míra zkonzumovaného alkoholu a míra citlivosti vůči úzkosti korelovaly slabě. Ženy dosahovaly vyšší míry citlivosti vůči úzkosti než muži. Nepodařilo se podpořit předpoklad, že vztah mezi citlivostí vůči úzkosti a copingovým motivem bude silnější u žen než u mužů.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to explore drinking motives of young and middle-aged adults and the relationship between drinking motives, anxiety sensitivity and alcohol consumption. The research sample consisted of 231 people at total, including 149 young adults (aged 18-23) and 82 middle-aged adults (aged 35-50). Drinking Motives Questionnaire-Revised and Anxiety Sensitivity Index-3 were used to assess the anxiety sensitivity and drinking motives. Alcohol consumption rate was calculated from frequency and qauntity rates. The most common motive across both age groups was the social motive, followed by enhancement motive, coping motive and conformity motive. Young adults scored higher than middle-aged adults on all the motives which is in accordence with their higher quantity rates. Among all the motives, alcohol consumption rate had the strongest correlation with coping motive and enhancement motive. Anxiety sensitivity correlated with coping motive more than with other motives. There was rather weak correlation between alcohol consumption rate and anxiety sensitivity. Women scored higher than men on the anxiety sensitivity. The expectation that the relationship between anxiety sensitivity and coping motive would be stronger in women than men was not supported.
