Symbolic boundaries between social worlds

Abstract:

Tato kritická reflexe vychází z představy rozdělení současných vyspělých společnosti do tří sociálních světů, které jsou charakteristické nesouměřitelností svých životních podmínek. Jednotlivé světy – elitu, střední vrstvy a deklasované – definujeme na základě Kellerova textu Tři sociální světy [2010]. Mezi navzájem oddělenými vrstvami společnosti musí existovat hranice; naším cílem je proto najít a popsat symbolické hranice mezi třemi sociálními světy. Symbolické hranice jsou totiž nutnou, nikoli však dostačující podmínkou vytváření nerovnosti a exkluze [Lamont 1992: 178]. Využitím tohoto konceptu zároveň Kellerovo dílo rozšiřujeme, neboť sám autor existenci symbolických hranic nereflektuje, a upozorňujeme na určité limity, které se v jeho textu objevují – například v souvislosti s pojetím nezaměstnanosti, individualizace či s existencí tříd v postindustriální společnosti. V neposlední řadě práce přináší též přehled historického vývoje konceptu symbolických hranic, a to od příspěvku Èmile Durkheima z počátku 20. století až po současnou diferenciaci přístupů k jejich zkoumání, se zvláštním důrazem na dílo Pierre Bourdieuho a Michèle Lamont.

Abstract:

In the centre of this critique is the notion of three social worlds, in which postindustrial western societies are divided. Living conditions in these worlds (i. e., elite, middle-classes and outclasses) are incommensurable, according to Keller’s opinion in his latest book Three Social Worlds [2010]. Boundaries should be found between these divided worlds; what is primarily at issue here is finding and describing symbolic boundaries between the three social worlds. Symbolic boundaries are a necessary but insufficient condition for the creation of inequality and social exclusion [Lamont 1992: 178]. Using this concept, this thesis broadens the horizons of Keller’s work, as far as author himself pays no attention to the existence of symbolic boundaries, and it also sheds light on his work’s limits (e. g., the notion of unemployment, individualization or class existence in contemporary societies). This thesis also brings the review of historical development of the symbolic boundaries concept, from Èmile Durkheim’s work in early 20th century to the current approach-differentiation, stressing the contribution of Pierre Bourdieu and Michèle Lamont.
