Needs of parents who care of an adolescent with multiple disability

Abstract:

The goal of this work is to map the needs of parents of children with multiple disabilities in adolescence and contribute to better understanding of this problem, eventually contribute to enhancement of services, which are accessible to these parents. Study may serve as a base for a wider quantitative research. This investigation uses qualitative approach. Concretely, analysis of text products of surveyed persons was used and following obtaining information, the questions for face-to-face interview with each parent participating in the research were prepared consequently. Analysis of data used in this research was inspired with phenomenological analysis. 9 parents of children (8 mothers and 1 father) with multiple disabilities in adolescence had participated in this research. In the selection of surveyed persons, criteria selection was used and parents were found through the institutions, that their children go into (Domov sociálnych služieb in Žilina and Základná špeciálna škola in Žilina – liberal translation: Home of social services in Žilina and Special elementary school in Žilina). Areas, that parents articulated as important in light of research theme by themselves, were these: economic situation; (un)employment of parents; contact with the offices and professionals; quality of services; barriers, with which they meet because of disability of their children; gains and losses connected with breeding and caring of a child with disability; maturing of a child with disability; mutual relationships in family; contact with friends; contact with other families with children with disabilities; sharing and gaining of information; contact with unknown people; problem of integration of a child with disability; and so on.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce je zmapovať potreby rodičov dospievajúcich detí s kombinovaným postihnutím a prispieť tak k lepšiemu pochopeniu tejto problematiky, prípadne ku skvalitneniu služieb, ktoré sú týmto rodičom dostupné. Štúdia môže poslúžiť ako základ pre širší kvantitatívny výskum. Tento výskum využíva kvalitatívny prístup. Konkrétne bola použitá analýza textových produktov skúmaných osôb a na základe získaných informácií následne boli pripravené otázky pre osobný rozhovor s každým rodičom participujúcim na výskume. Analýza dát použitá v tomto výskume sa inšpirovala fenomenologickou analýzou. Výskumu sa zúčastnilo 9 rodičov dospievajúcich detí s kombinovaným postihnutím (8 matiek a 1 otec). Pri výbere skúmaných osôb bol použitý kritériový výber a rodičia boli nájdení skrze inštitúcie, ktoré navštevujú ich deti (Domov sociálnych služieb v Žiline a Základná špeciálna škola v Žiline). Oblasti, ktoré samotní rodičia artikulovali ako významné z hľadiska témy výskumu boli tieto: ekonomická situácia; (ne)zamestnanosť rodičov; kontakt s úradmi a s odborníkmi; kvalita služieb; bariéry, s ktorými sa vzhľadom k postihnutiu dieťaťa rodiny stretávajú; zisky a straty spojené s výchovou a starostlivosťou o dieťa s postihnutím; dospievanie dieťaťa s postihnutím; vzájomné vzťahy v rodine; kontakt s priateľmi; kontakt s inými rodinami s deťmi s postihnutím; zdieľanie a získavanie informácií; kontakt s neznámymi ľuďmi; problematika integrácie dieťaťa s postihnutím; a ďalšie.
