The Swedish Open-prison Concept as a Potential Model for Other Countries

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis focuses on the Swedish concept of minimum-security prisons, so-called open prisons, where prisoners have a relatively high degree of freedom. According to incarceration and recidivism rates, Sweden has one of the most efficient prison systems. Therefore, the aim of this thesis is to examine what opinions about this model prevail in other countries, specifically the USA and the United Kingdom. The theoretical part includes the fundamental ideas of the Swedish penal policy, a short history of incarceration in the country and the functioning of open prisons. In the practical part, views on the subject in the two given countries are analysed, mainly on the basis of selected Internet articles. At the same time, it is examined whether it is possible to implement the Swedish prison concept in the selected countries.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca sa zaoberá švédskym konceptom väzníc s najnižším stupňom stráženia, takzvaných otvorených ústavov, kde odsúdení oplývajú relatívne veľkou mierou slobody. Nakoľko má Švédsko podľa štatistík uväzňovania a recidívy jeden z najefektívnejších väzenských systémov, cieľom práce je preskúmať, aké názory na tento model prevládajú v iných krajinách, a síce v USA a Veľkej Británii. V teoretickej časti sú zahrnuté myšlienky švédskeho trestného systému, krátka história väznenia v krajine či fungovanie otvorených ústavov. V praktickej časti sú najmä na základe vybraných internetových článkov analyzované názory na danú problematiku vo vybratých krajinách. Zároveň je skúmané, či je na základe týchto názorov možné implementovať švédsky väzenský model v daných štátoch.
