The Hypothesis of the Twin Deficit: The Empirical Analysis, Cases of some Chosen Countries

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá problematikou hypotézy dvojího deficitu, tedy současného deficitu státního rozpočtu a běžného účtu. V teoretické části jsou představeny dva hlavní teoretické směry týkající se uvedeného problému, a to keynesiánský konvenční přístup a ricardiánský model, jakož i K-M model. Práce dále představuje podrobnou analýzu řady studií, které se uvedenému tématu věnovaly (např. práce Roubiniho a Kima, Abella, Abbase a kol. a dalších). Vybranými zeměmi pro testování hypotézy dvojího deficitu byly Spojené státy americké, Velká Británie a Itálie. Je proto představen hospodářský vývoj v uvedených zemích od 80. let 20. století do současnosti, a to v kontextu celosvětového ekonomického vývoje. V praktické části byly ekonometricky testovány kauzality jdoucí od vládního deficitu k deficitu běžného účtu. K ekonometrické analýze byly využity modely VAR, kointegrační analýza, Grangerova kauzalita a Impulse response function.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the problematics of the twin deficit hypothesis, e. g. the simultaneous deficits of the state budget and of the current account. In the theoretical part, there are presented two main theoretical approaches, the Keynesian conventional approach and the Ricardian model, and also the K -- M model. The thesis presents also the main analysis of a lot of papers which dealt with the given topic (e. g. papers by Roubini and Kim, Abell, Abbas and others etc.). The chosen countries for testing of the twin deficit hypothesis were the United States, Great Britain and Italy. There is thus presented the economic development in the given countries from the 80th of the 20th century by nowadays under the context of the world economy. In the practical part, the causalities going from the government deficit to the current account deficit were tested by means of econometrics. The VAR models, the co-integration analysis, Granger causality and the Impulse response function were used.
