Man and His Salvation in the Light of the Economy of the Holy Spirit: An Analysis of the Soteriological and Pneumatological Insights of Vladimir Lossky

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá soteriologicko-pneumatologickými intuicemi v díle významného pravoslavného teologa Vladimira Losského. Nejprve představuje historický a intelektuální kontext jeho života v exilu, formování jeho myšlení a základní charakteristiky jeho teologické metody, kterými jsou zejména apofatismus a rozlišení mezi Boží podstatou a energiemi. Následně práce analyzuje Losského pojetí stvoření člověka, jeho tragického pádu (fragmentace lidství) a objektivního vykoupení padlé lidské přirozenosti skrze spásnou ekonomii Božího Syna. V poslední části se text detailně věnuje ekonomii Ducha Svatého a subjektivní spáse člověka, tedy samotnému procesu zbožštění (theosis). Práce popisuje Církev a svátosti jako prostor pro mystickou zkušenost a představuje asketickou cestu člověka skrze pokání, modlitbu a kontemplaci, jež v synergii s milostí Ducha Svatého vede k plnému sjednocení stvořené lidské osoby s Bohem.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis explores the soteriological and pneumatological insights in the work of the prominent Orthodox theologian Vladimir Lossky. It first presents the historical and intellectual context of his life in exile, the formation of his thought, and the fundamental characteristics of his theological method, specifically apophaticism and the distinction between the divine essence and energies. Subsequently, the thesis analyzes Lossky's conception of the creation of man, his tragic fall (the fragmentation of humanity), and the objective redemption of the fallen human nature through the salvific economy of the Son of God. The final section provides a detailed examination of the economy of the Holy Spirit and the subjective salvation of man, namely the process of deification (theosis). The thesis describes the Church and the sacraments as a space for mystical experience and presents the ascetic path of man through repentance, prayer, and contemplation, which, in synergy with the grace of the Holy Spirit, leads to the full union of the created human person with God.
