“Do you understand?” – an analysis of the use of understanding-check questions in the EFL classroom

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá používáním učitelských otázek ověřujících porozumění, konkrétně understanding-check questions (UC questions), v české třídě, kde se frontálně vyučuje anglický jazyk. V rámci práce se snažím odpovědět na následující výzkumné otázky: V jakých sekvenčních prostředích používá učitel angličtiny otázky ověřující porozumění u studentů? a Jak studenti na tyto otázky reagují? Teoretická část mé práce se do hloubky zabývá konkrétním typem otázek, tj. uzavřenými (ano/ne) otázkami, které se často vyskytují v mých nahrávkách. Do této kategorie patří i již zmíněné otázky ověřující porozumění, například: Rozuměli jste? Ještě něco? (angl. Do you understand? Anything else?), které učitel spíše používá jako nástroj k získání tvrzení o porozumění než jako ukázku rozumění chápání.S uzavřenými (ano/ne) otázkami také úzce souvisí tzv. preference, která se vyskytuje v kontextu sekvenční analýzy těchto uzavřených otázek. Dále jsou v diplomové práci představeny čtyři studie zabývající se otázkami porozumění, ve kterých výzkumníci zjistili, že nejen učitelé, ale i studenti mají tendenci klást otázky porozumění ve dvou sekvenčních prostředích, a to v intervalech, ve kterých se objevuje přechod mezi aktivitami a po výkladu. Nahrávky čtyř vyučovacích hodin byly analyzovány pomocí metody konverzační analýzy. V diplomové práci představuji tři různá sekvenční prostředí, ve kterých učitelka angličtiny používá tzv. UC questions: přechod mezi aktivitami (angl. activity-boundary), povýukové či povýkladové prostředí (angl. post instruction/explanation) a během aktivit (ang. within-activity). Reakce studentů na tyto otázky mají tendenci inklinovat (inklinují) spíše k odpovědím či reakcím, které naznačují, že s konkrétní aktivitou nemají problém, respektive že rozumí instrukcím a cílovému jazyku dané aktivity. Tento výsledek je poněkud kontroverzní, o čemž více pojednávám v diskuzní části práce. Výsledky analýzy jsou zároveň důležité pro učitele cizích jazyků, protože mohou poskytnout vhled do používání otázek ověřujících porozumění ve výuce angličtiny v České republice, kdy otázky ověřující porozumění představují didaktický nástroj pro získávání zpětné vazby od studentů. V závěru práce navrhuji některá zlepšení, pomocí kterých lze zdokonalit formulaci těchto otázek, s cílem získat spolehlivé a pravdivé odpovědi ze strany studentů týkající se porozumění cílového jazyka.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the use of understanding-check questions in four frontally taught EFL classes in an upper-secondary school in the Czech Republic. The goals of the thesis are to analyse in what sequential environments the teacher poses understanding-check questions and how the students react to it. The theoretical part of the thesis explains the nature of yes-no questions and the importance of preference, which is tightly connected to the analysis of yes-no questions in a sequential environment. Additionally, it also introduces the function of understanding-check questions rather as elicitors of claim understandings than demonstrations of knowing. An overview of four additional studies concerning the topic of checking understanding is presented, where researchers found that not only teachers but students as well pose questions of understanding in two sequential environments: after a transition-relevance place and after an explanation. The data for the thesis were analysed with the help of conversation analysis, a method which helped me reveal the answers to my research questions. In the thesis, I represent three main sequential environments in which the teacher uses understanding-check questions: activity-boundary, post instruction/explanation and within-activity environment. The students' response to the UC questions in each environment is analysed in great detail, and it rather inclines to a no-problem preferring orientation. However, this finding may cause controversy which is also discussed in the thesis. The results of my data also represent a meaningful insight into the use of understanding-check questions in the EFL classroom in Czechia as a pedagogical ‘tool’ for receiving feedback from the EFL learners, and suggestions on how to improve the formulation of these questions in order to receive more reliable and truthful answers from the students concerning their understanding of the target language.
