Women and Ways of Escape from Marriage in Victorian England

Abstract:

This thesis examines the problems and limitations of marriage women had to deal with in Victorian England, and it maps out their possibilities of escaping them. In particular, the thesis analyses divorce and suicide as ways of escape from marriage and home-making, childcare, hobbies, and jobs as ways of escape within marriage. It shows how emancipation helped women to fully use the old ways of escape from marriage and to win new and more effective ways of escape at the same time.
