On the role of sensory deprivation, social seclusion, and authority in the formation of religious experience

Abstract:

Jak lze přistoupit ke studiu náboženských zkušeností empirickými prostředky? Kognitivní a evoluční vědy o náboženství se v současnosti zaměřují na studium tzv. stavebních bloků jako základních a antropologicky univerzálních faktorů formujících prožitky považované za náboženské (nebo jinak zvláštní). Ve své disertační práci jsem se proto zaměřila na studium tří vybraných faktorů: smyslové deprivace, sociálního odloučení a vlivu autority v teoretickém rámci prediktivního zpracování. Na podporu obecných hypotéz odvozených z navrženého rámce jsem provedla dva originální empirické výzkumy: experimentální studii "pocitu přítomnosti" související s širší problematikou detekce činitelů (a její možnou rolí při vzniku náboženských zkušeností) a kvalitativní etnografickou studii praxe tzv. terapie tmou, spontánně využívající všechny tři faktory mého zájmu v kulturním kontextu alternativní spirituality. Tato práce však nejen doplňuje navržený teoretický rámec o nová empirická data, ale také na základě shromážděných poznatků a jejich širší teoretické kontextualizace diskutuje možnost teoretického obratu směrem k procesuálnímu chápání náboženských zkušeností. Procesuální obrat by mohl rozšířit a inovovat původní přístup stavebních bloků a nabídnout nové slibné způsoby teoreticko-metodologické konceptualizace výzkumu náboženských zkušeností.

Abstract:

How can religious experience be approached and studied by empirical means? The cognitive and evolutionary sciences of religion currently focus on studying so-called building blocks as basic and anthropologically universal factors forming experiences deemed religious (or otherwise special). Thus, in my dissertation, I focused on studying three selected factors: sensory deprivation, social seclusion, and the influence of authority under the theoretical framework of predictive processing. To support general hypotheses derived from the proposed framework, I conducted two original empirical investigations: an experimental study of the “feeling of presence” related to the broader agency detection problematics (with its possible role in the emergence of religious experiences) and a qualitative ethnographic study on the practice of so-called Dark therapy, spontaneously employing all three factors of my interest within the cultural context of alternative spirituality. However, this thesis not only complements the proposed theoretical framework with new empirical data but also—based on gathered findings and their broader theoretical contextualization—discusses the possibility of a theoretical turn towards a processual understanding of religious experiences. The processual turn could extend and innovate the original building block approach and offer promising new ways of theoretic-methodological conceptualisation of religious experiences’ research.
