Illusion and Disillusion As the Theme od 20th Century American Drama

Abstract:

Anotace Diplomová práce Iluze a deziluze jako téma amerického dramatu 20. století pojednává o výrazném tématu obsaženém v mnoha amerických divadelních hrách minulého století – tématu iluze a deziluze. V analýzách třech konkrétních her, které reprezentují dílo nejvýznamnějších amerických dramatiků – Eugena O´Neilla, Tennessee Williamse a Arthura Millera, se autor této práce zaměřuje právě na téma iluzí a deziluzí a zkoumá, jakým způsobem k němu jednotliví dramatikové přistupují a jak s ním ve svých dílech zacházejí. Ve shrnující kapitole jsou pak konkrétní poznatky o postavách z jednotlivých her a jejich tématech srovnávány, se snahou najít mezi nimi souvislosti a označit rozdíly. Diplomová práce by tak měla odpovědět na otázky, z jakého důvodu je toto téma natolik výrazné právě v americké dramatické literatuře a zda je aktuální i dnes.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis Illusion and Disillusion As the Theme of 20th Century American Drama deals with the major themes contained in many American plays of the last century - the theme of illusion and disillusion. The author of this diploma thesis analyses three specific plays that represent the work of the most important American playwrights - Eugene O'Neill, Tennessee Williams and Arthur Miller and focuses on the theme of illusion and disillusion. The diploma thesis also examines the playwrights' individual approaches to illusion and disillusion and the way they deal with them in their work. In the summarizing chapter, specific findings about the individual characters and the main themes of the plays are compared in order to find a mutual connection and mark differences. This diploma thesis should answer the question, why is the theme of illusion and disillusion so significant for American theater and whether it is relevant nowadays.
