A comparative analysis of selected Czech theatre translations of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Importance of Being Earnest in contrast to English originals

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is Cat on a Hot Tin Roof and The Importance of Being Earnest in Czech theatre translations. The main aim of the thesis is to identify specific features of the translation of dramatic texts and their change throughout time. The method by which the thesis finds the answers to the set goal is a comparative analysis. The corpus which is essential to the thesis is following: In the case of the Cat on a Hot Tin Roof the corpus is as follows: the original version of the play by Tennessee Williams dated back to 1955; the translation of Luba and Rudolf Pellars dated back to 1965; the translation of Milan Lukeš from 1986; and the translation of Zuzana Josková from 2019. In the case of The Importance of Being Earnest, the corpus is the original by Oscar Wilde from 1895 and two significant translations: the translation of J.Z. Novák from 1959 and the translation of Pavel Dominik from 2011. Among the findings of the thesis are, for example, systematic shifts - e.g. polite and non-polite forms of addressing in The Importance of Being Earnest, which means that the translator tries to be as close to the current audience as possible by omitting polite form of addressing.

Téma diplomové práce zní Kočka na rozpálené plechové střeše a Jak je důležité míti Filipa v českých divadelních překladech. Cílem práce je pak zjistit hlavní znaky překladu dramatických textů a jejich proměnu v čase. Metodou pro získání výsledků je komparativní analýza. Korpus k práci tvoří originály děl Kočka na rozpálené plechové střeše (1955) a Jak je důležité míti Filipa (1895) a jejich překlady. V případě prvního díla se jedná o překlady Luby a Rudolfa Pellarových z roku 1965, překlad Milana Lukeše z roku 1986 a překlad Zuzany Joskové z roku 2019. V případě hry Jak je důležité míti Filipa se jedná o překlady J.Z. Nováka (1959) a překlad Pavla Dominika (2011). Jedním z výsledků analýzy je přítomnost systémových posunů, kdy například vykání je v souladu s vývojem společenských norem v novějším překladu hry Jak je důležité míti Filipa nahrazeno tykáním apod.
