How the Atomic Bomb Altered the Course of WWII

Abstract:

The first ever use of atomic energy as a weapon of mass destruction brought a swift end to a war conflict between USA and Japan during the World War II. The purpose of this thesis is to consider the consequences of the Nagasaki and Hiroshima bombing and evaluate, whether this act was truly justified or whether it was just a demonstration of power. Another purpose of this thesis is to introduce the reader to Project Manhattan and to the fact that a wide range of other factors, such as political intrigue, personal aims, acts of revenge, strive for power or Japanese codex of honor, played vital role in the final decision to drop the atomic bomb on Japan.

Abstract:

První využití atomové energie jako zbraně hromadného ničení přineslo rychlé rozuzlení válečného konfliktu mezi Spojenými státy americkými a Japonskem během Druhé světové války. Účelem této práce je zhodnotit dopad bombardování měst Nagasaki a Hirošimy a zvážit, zdali byl tento čin opravdu opodstatněný a či se jednalo o pouhý akt demonstrace síly. Dalším účelem této práce je pak seznámit čtenáře s existence Projektu Manhattan a s faktem, že při konečném rozhodnutí o shození atomové bomby na Japonsko, hrála roli celá řada dalších faktorů, jako byly politické intriky, sledování osobních cílů, touha po moci nebo japonský kodex cti.
