Flight as the Main Motif in Martin Walser’s Short Novel „Ein fliehendes Pferd"

Abstract:

This diploma work deals with the short novel "Runaway horse", written by the west German author Martin Walser, and briefly with its next episode in Walser’s novel "Breakers". The main problem of these pieces is the question, how to become itself and at the same time stay a social human being in this contemporary west society. Walser figures this question on the basis of a negation of his characters, which causes their mental disunity und the resulting attempt of flight in face of surrounding world in their inner world. As the short story so the novel try to outline the "problems", which hangs together with social life, like the missing self-confidence and there from resulting crisis of the own identity, the missing love and the subsequent self estrangement, the problem of communication and the reciprocal dependence of subject and society. The following cinematization according to the short novel "Runaway horse" exposes the divergences of the film from the literary artwork and the different conception of the flight motif. All this is included in my diploma work.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá novelou západoněmeckého spisovatele Martina Walsera "Prchající kůň", v krátkosti pak jeho pokračováním ve Walserově románě "Příboj". Hlavním problémem těchto děl je otázka, jak se stát sám sebou a přitom zůstat společenským člověkem současné západní společnosti. Walser tuto otázku zobrazuje na základě negace jeho postav, což způsobuje jejich duševní rozpolcenost a následný pokus o útěk před okolním světem do svého vnitřního světa. Jak novela, tak i román nám chtějí nastínit "problémy", které souvisí se společenským životem, jako například chybějící sebevědomí a z toho vyplývající krize vlastní identity, chybějící láska a následné odcizení sobě samému, problém komunikace a vzájemná závislost jedince a společnosti. Následné zfilmování podle stejnojmenné novely "Prchající kůň" ukazuje odchylky filmu od literární předlohy a rozdílné pojetí motivu útěku. To vše je obsaženo v této práci.
