Insect sensitivity to radiofrequency electromagnetic fields.

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá možnými účinky elektromagnetických polí vytvořených člověkem na cirkadiánní rytmy hmyzu. Teoretická část seznamuje čtenáře se základními fyzikálními principy elektromagnetismu a molekulárními mechanismy v chronobiologii. Hlavním cílem našeho výzkumu bylo odhalit vliv různých elektromagnetických podmínek na vzorce chování hmyzu v oblasti lokomoční aktivity. Získaná data ukazují vliv statických i oscilujících elektromagnetických polí na cirkadiánní periody hmyzu. Účinky byly studovány na modelech hmyzu s molekulární regulací cirkadiánního rytmu podobnou savcům. Překvapivě se účinky projevují i v úplné tmě, což není v souladu s klasickým modelem chemické magnetorecepce. Tato studie poskytuje cenné poznatky o potenciálníchfyziologických dopadech elektromagnetických polí generovaných.člověkem na molekulární hodiny u různých organismů, včetně člověka. Naše zjištění přinesla nové otázky týkající se pochopení role světla v magnetorecepci.

Abstract:

This thesis investigates the possible effects of man-made electromagnetic fields on the circadian rhythms of insects. The theoretical part introduces reader to basic physical principles of electromagnetism and molecular mechanisms in chronobiology. The main goal of our research was to reveal the impact of different electromagnetic conditions on insect behavioural patterns of locomotor activity. Data obtained show the effects of both static and oscillating electromagnetic fields on circadian periods of insects. The effects were studied on insect models with mammalian-like molecular regulation of circadian rhythm. Surprisingly, the effects are present in complete darkness which is not in line with classical model of chemical magnetoreception. This study provides valuable insights into the potential physiological impacts of human-generated electromagnetic fields on molecular clock in variety of organisms, including humans. Our findings have raised new questions regarding the understanding of the role of light in magnetoreception.
