Statistical methods for segmentation in MRI brain images

Abstract:

Tato práce předkládá návrh multimodální metriky pro kvantifikované srovnání metod segmentace MR obrazů mozku. Navržená metrika sestává z Jaccardova koeficientu, modifikovaného Rand indexu a Connectivity koeficientu a umožňuje vizualizovat výsledky zmíněných koeficientů ve 3-D grafech pomocí elipsoidů místo běžně používaných 1-D sloupcových grafů či tabulek. Součástí práce je rovněž implementace vlastních modifikací známých neparametrických klasifikátorů, kterými jsou k-means algoritmus a k-nearest neighbor algoritmus. Konkrétně je předmětem zkoumání přínos tkáňových pravděpodobnostních map pro automatické trénování zmíněných algoritmů s ohledem na efektivitu klasifikace. Prezentované výsledky byly získány z výpočetních experimentů na simulovaných MR obrazech mozku s různou úrovní artefaktů.

Abstract:

A multimodal measure for quantitative comparison of efficiency of methods for segmentation in MRI brain images is proposed in this thesis. The efficiency measure combines Jaccard coefficient, modified Rand index and Connectivity coefficient. Their results are presented in 3-D plots with the use of ellipsoids instead of frequently used 1 D plots or tables. This thesis is also focused on implementation of own modifications of selected well-known nonparametric classifiers: k-means algorithm and k-nearest neighbor algorithm. Particularly, an advantage of using tissue probability maps for automated construction of training data set is under the scope. Presented results were acquired from computational experiments on simulated MRI brain images with various levels of artifacts.
