Information Behaviour and Needs of Research Institute Employees: Case Study of Transport Research Centre

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá informačním chováním a informačními potřebami vědeckovýzkumných pracovníků Centra dopravního výzkumu v Brně. Informační chování je lidské chování ve vztahu k různým informačním zdrojům představující aktivní i pasivní hledání informací. Zahrnuje v sobě proces vyhledávání, zpracování, vyhodnocování a využívání informací. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části práce jsme považovali za nutné charakterizovat informační chování v obecném slova smyslu a celkovém kontextu. Jsou zde uvedeny aspekty ovlivňující informační chování a vymezeny vybrané pojmy s ním související. Je definována informační potřeba a naznačen proces její identifikace. Pro lepší pochopení informačního chování jako jevu a procesu je v teoretické části práce nastíněna problematika modelování informačního chování s uvedením modelů některých předních autorů. Také je zmíněna typologie informačního chování, která dělí uživatelé informací podle různých kritérií. V závěru teoretické části práce je představeno Centrum dopravního výzkumu, jeho poslání a činnost včetně činnosti knihovny organizace. Následná praktická část práce je věnována výzkumu informačního chování a potřeb vědeckovýzkumných pracovníků Centra dopravního výzkumu. Uskutečněný výzkum je pro tuto práci stěžejním bodem. Sleduje především, jaký je vztah respondentů k jednotlivým informačním zdrojům, jaký druh informací respondenti pro svoji práci potřebují, jakým způsobem k hledání informací přistupují, jaké pocity a bariéry se u nich při hledání informací vyskytují, a jak využívají a hodnotí knihovnu zmíněné organizace. Na základě analýzy výsledků výzkumu jsou navrženy konkrétní nástroje, kterými může knihovna organizace lépe uspokojovat informační potřeby svých uživatelů a přispět tak k výzkumné činnosti organizace.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with information behaviour and needs of researchers of Transport Research Centre in Brno. Information behaviour is human behaviour related to different information sources representing active as well as passive information seeking. It involves the process of searching, processing, assessing and using of information. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theory characterises information behaviour itself in general perspective. Aspects which affect information behaviour are mentioned and related key words are identified. Information needs are defined and the process of their identification is described. To understand the information behaviour as a phenomenon and a process, the theory contains the issue of information behaviour modelling together with models of some renowned authors in the field. Typology of information behaviour, which classifies information users according to certain criteria, is mentioned. At the end of the theoretical part, Transport Research centre, its mission and activities, including its library, is introduced. The practical part deals with the research of information behaviour and needs of researchers of Transport Research centre. The research is a crucial point for the thesis. It focuses on the attitude of respondents towards individual information sources, types of information respondents need for their work, their approach to information searching, feelings and obstacles occurring when searching for information, and how they use and value the Institute library. Based on the analysis of the research results specific tools, with the use of which the library may improve its services to meet the needs of its users, are designed.
