In Search of Identity: The Role of Language in Harold Pinter's Plays

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je prozkoumat způsob, jakým britský dramatik Harold Pinter využívá nový přístup k jazyku, který vznikl s nástupem absurdního dramatu. Absurdní drama vychází z filosofie existencialismu a líčí svět změněný následky druhé světové války jako absurdní místo postrádající jakýkoliv smysl, ze kterého se člověk odcizil a které nedokáže pochopit. V takovém světě jsou jeho existence, jakož i všechny jeho činy, nesmyslné, bezúčelné, absurdní. A takovým je i jazyk, který ho popisuje – zbavený jakéhokoliv smyslu. Harold Pinter, nejzřetelnější hlas absurdního dramatu na prknech britských divadel, ve svých prvních třech hrách The Room, The Birthday Party a The Dumb Waiter takový jazyk používá a přiřazuje mu důležitou funkci: stáva se z něj prostředek na vytvoření, definování, předefinování či utajení identit jeho postav. Stáva se z něj prostředek, který Pinterovy postavy používají na to, aby zjistily, kdo ve skutečnosti jsou, aby se staly samy sebou. Práce je rozdělena do čtyř kapitol. První kapitola se zaměřuje na absurdní drama a představuje jeho klíčové koncepty a myšlenky, které motivovaly jeho vznik, jakož i jeho pozdější vývoj. Rozebíraný jsou zde také základní pojmy filosofie existencialismu, která ovlivnila představitele absurdního dramatu. Druhá kapitola je věnována osobě Harolda Pintera a představuje a rozebírá charakteristické rysy jeho díla. Třetí kapitola analyzuje tři Pinterovy hry, The Room, The Birthday Party a The Dumb Waiter, které jsou často označovány jako „comedies of menace“ (komedie hrozeb). Předmětem rozboru je fungování jazyka v těchto hrách a způsob, jakým ho jednotlivé postavy používají ve svém zápase o pochopení samy sebe. Poslední čtvrtá kapitola shrnuje poznatky z analýzy tří her, porovnává je a utváří závěry o úloze jazyka při definování identit postav ve hrách Harolda Pintera.

Abstract:

The main aim of this thesis is to look at how British playwright Harold Pinter makes use of the new approach to language that emerged with the rise of the Theatre of the Absurd. Based on the philosophy of existentialism, the Theatre of the Absurd depicts a newly changed world as an absurd place devoid of any meaning, from which man feels alienated and which he cannot comprehend. In such a world, his existence, as well as all his actions, are meaningless, purposeless, absurd. And so too is the language that describes it – a language deprived of any meaning. In his first three plays, The Room, The Birthday Party and The Dumb Waiter, Harold Pinter, the strongest voice of the Absurd on the boards of British theatres, uses such language and assigns it an important function: it is a means his characters use to create their identities, define and redefine them or conceal them. It is a means they use to find out who they really are, to become themselves. The thesis is divided into four chapters. The first chapter looks at the Theatre of the Absurd and introduces its key concepts and ideas that motivated its birth as well as its later development. The basic concepts of the philosophy of existentialism that influenced the Absurdist playwrights are discussed as well. The second chapter is devoted to Harold Pinter and presents and comments on the characteristic features of his drama. The third chapter analyses three Pinter plays – The Room, The Birthday Party and The Dumb Waiter – that are often labelled as comedies of menace. It analyses how language functions in these plays and how it is employed by the characters in their struggles to understand and to become themselves. The fourth chapter summarizes the findings of the three plays’ analysis, compares them and draws conclusions about the role of language in defining characters’ identities in Harold Pinter’s plays.
