Books as an ´asylum land´ in work by Michael Ende and Cornelia Funke

Abstract:

The diploma thesis called Bücher als Asyllandschaft im Werk von Michael Ende und Cornelia Funke deals with the topic of escape from everyday life and with books used by main characters as an asylum. Namely with the book Die unendliche Geschichte by Michael Ende and the ?Tintenwelt?-trilogy written by Cornelia Funke. An important part of the thesis is an analysis of the main characters and their impulse to leave the reality and to flee into the world of fantasy. For this reason the terms ?asylum? and ?escapism? are introduced at the beginning and explained from a psychological as well as a sociological point of view. In the following chapters one can find a description and a typology of settings of a book and parallel worlds. At the end there are analysed names of characters used by Funke and Ende, reason for their choice and also their symbolic meaning.

Abstract:

Die Diplomarbeit mit dem Titel Bücher als Asyllandschaft im Werk von Michael Ende und Cornelia Funke beschäftigt sich mit dem Thema der Flucht aus dem Alltagsleben und mit Büchern, die Hauptfiguren als Asyllandschaft benutzen. Es handelt sich um das Buch Die unendliche Geschichte von Michael Ende und die Tintenwelt-Trilogie von Cornelia Funke. In der Arbeit werden unter anderem die Begriffe ?Eskapismus? und ?Asyl? erklärt und eine Figurenanalyse durchgeführt. Im Zentrum des Interesses stehen dann die Motivation und Gründen der Hauptfiguren, in die Asyllandschaft zu flüchten, ihre Wirkung in der realen bzw. phantastischen Welt. Als das zweite wichtige Thema meiner Diplomarbeit werden Bücherwelten und phantastische Welten allgemein mit ihrer Gliederung und Charakteristik behandelt. Zum Schluss wird noch eine symbolische Bedeutung von den in beiden Werken vorkommenden Namen analysiert. Dazu werden die Namenauswahl und die Verteilung erklärt.
