The Sociology of the Tattoo: Anchoring Identity through the body Practices

Abstract:

Abstrakt: Práce se teoreticky zabývá tím, jak se může skrze praktiky těla zakotvovat identita, konkrétně pak skrze tetování. Navazuji na myšlenku Paula Sweetmana a jeho předpoklad, že tetování může sloužit k zakotvení identity v postmoderní době, tuto myšlenku problematizuji a snažím se jí poskytnout širší diskurzivní rámec. Sweetman vychází z pozice subjektivizmu, snažím se tuto ideu obohatit o sociální konstruktivismus a poststrukturalistickou perspektivu, oba tyto přístupy tuto myšlenku pozměňují, problematizují a vedou ke zhodnocení různých diskurzů identity ve společnosti. Zabývám se především individuální identitou a individuálním tělem, jakožto prostorem pro vlastní redefinici a objektem normativních praktik v rámci postmoderní, či pozdně moderní doby. Snažím se více rozvinout a objasnit, jak se konstruuje narace okolo tetování ve výpovědích vztahujících se k němu.

Abstract: The work theoretically looks at how the practices of the body, specifically tattoos, tattooing, could anchor an identity. I refer to the idea of Paul Sweetman and his assumption that tattoos can be used to anchor an identity in the postmodern era. I problematize this idea and try to give it a wider discursive framework. Sweetman’s approach is based on the subjectivistic theoretical position, I am trying to enrich the idea of social constructivism and post-structuralist perspective, both of these approaches have altered this idea making some of these assumptions problematic. I want to turn the focus to the evaluation of various discourses of the identity in society according to the tattoo meaning. I am pointing out the processes and discourses of postmodern times, which may contribute to the perceived importance of the body as a tool for self-expression and self-understanding. I will deal mainly with individual identity and individual body as a space for self-redefinition and the object of normative practices within the postmodern or late modern age. I'm trying to develop more and explain how the narrative is constructed around tattoo.
