The role of perfectionism and certain personality characteristics in the context of subjective perception of overtraining in team sports

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem bakalářské práce bylo prozkoumat vztah perfekcionismu a vybraných osobnostních charakteristik v kontextu subjektivně vnímané míry přetrénování v týmových sportech na skupině adolescentů a zmapovat vztah perfekcionismu a vybraných osobnostních charakteristik. Také jsme ověřili psychometrické vlastnosti použitých metod – českých verzí dotazníků BFI-44, POMS a Sport-MPS-2. Kvantitativní výzkumné studie se celkem zúčastnilo 180 sportovců (M=180; 14-19 let; 16,10 věkový průměr). Předpoklad o vztahu přetrénování a osobnostních charakteristik včetně perfekcionismu byl potvrzen, přičemž nalezen byl velmi slabý ale signifikantní vztah mezi přetrénováním a perfekcionismem (r=0,189, p<0,001), Extraverzí (-0,241, p<0,001), Svědomitostí (r=-0,287, p<0,001) a Neuroticismem (r=0,343, p<0,001). Vztah také vykázal neuroticismus s perfekcionismem (r=-0,176, p<0,001). Také byl prokázán rozdíl v míře vnímané zátěže na základě v subjektivně vnímané obtížnosti tréninků. Rozdíl mezi skupinami sportovců v míře přetrénování podle sportu nalezen nebyl. Výsledky mají významný aplikační potenciál pro trenérskou sportovní praxi a mohou sloužit jako východiska pro navazující výzkum v dané oblasti.

Abstract:

The main aim of this bachelor´s thesis was to examine the relationship between perfectionism and personality traits with perceived training load in elite adolescent athletes. We also examined the relationship between perfectionism and certain personality traits. The secondary aim was to verify the basic psychometric characteristics of used methods. The study is based on the quantitative research and Czech versions of following methods were used: BFI-44, POMS a Sport-MPS-2. We collected data from 180 athletes (M=180; age 14-19; M= 16,10). The hypothesis about the relationship between the perfectionism and personality traits were confirmed. We found weak but significant correlation between perceived load level and perfectionism (r=0,189, p<0,001), Extraversion (-0,241, p<0,001), Conscientiousness (r=-0,287, p<0,001) and Neuroticism (r=0,343, p<0,001). The relationship between perfectionism and neuroticism was also found (r=-0,176, p<0,001). There was significant difference between groups in perceived training load according to perceived training difficulty. No difference was found between athletes playing different sports. Results can be used as basis for future research or in coaching practice.
