Imagination of national genes and the social theory embodied

Abstract:

Dizertační práce Imaginace národních genů a vtělená sociální teorie je v prvé řadě sociologickou a antropologickou konceptualizací tématu těla a tělesnosti. Text se v této části zabývá základními analytickými perspektivami, zvláště pak debatou mezi esencialismem a konstruktivismem. V další rovině je práce analýzou produkce idejí o stejnosti a různosti v rámci různých promluv a reprezentací DNA, genomu, těla. Zde vychází text z interpretativní sociální teorie. Téma distribuce stejnosti a rozdílnosti ukazuji i v rámci širší analytické oblasti současných projevů tzv. biomoci, a to zejména v případě kategorií jako jsou např. rasa, reprodukční medicína a genomika. Zde je hlavní pozornost věnována znovuzrození ideje rasy. Reprezentace „stejností“ a „rozdílností“, prezentované v populárním diskurzu, odkazují ke kulturní imaginaci genomiky a DNA výzkumu ve spojení s koncepty nacionality či etnicity. Text nastiňuje otázku konsekvencí, které s sebou může přinášet užívání představ o „původu“ či imaginace tělesnosti pro konstrukci nacionálního jádra nebo stěžejní solidarity nacionální komunity. Základní částí disertace je potom analýza spojení reprezentace těla, DNA, genomu a legitimizace identifikací etnických a nacionálních hranic. Tento fenomén je ale také předmětem zájmů věd sociálních, protože je součástí širšího proudu jevů souvisejících se specifickou správou moderní populace skrze tělesnost, skrze koncept života. Důraz na tělo a na bios, tedy na kategorii živého, stojí v základech moderního procesu vytváření a správy populace prostřednictvím biomoci/ biopolitiky — konceptu, který popsal ve svých textech Michel Foucault. Jeho současné projevy shrnují Paul Rabinow a Nicholas Rose ve svém textu Biopower Today, kde mluví o hlavních projevech biomoci: ideji rasy, reprodukční medicíně a genomice. Pozornost věnovaná reprezentacím tělesnosti, konkrétně DNA a idejím o diverzitě populací, je v této souvislosti důležitým předpokladem sociálně vědné konceptualizace nových hranic subjektivity, identity či přináležitosti k nacionální komunitě.

Abstract:

The thesis entitled Imagenation of National Genes – the Social Theory Embodied is a sociological and anthropological conceptualisation of the theme of body and corporeality above all. The text examines the main analytical perspectives concerning the debate between esencialism and constructivism in this part. Taking advantage of interpretative social theory, this dissertation examines the narrative concerning complementarity of sameness and difference in the production of knowledge within interpretation of various imaginations of DNA, genom and the body, mainly. The new emerging of the idea of race, like the main theme of distribution the sameness and difference, is critically analyses within broader area of contemporary forms of the biopower: questions of race, reproductive medicine and genomic. The special attention is paid to the recovering of the idea of race. These representations of “sameness” and “difference” presented in popular discourse refer to the cultural imagination of genomic and DNA research in connection with notions of nationality and ethnicity. This text asks the consequences which the use of words and images connected with concepts of “origin” or imagination of the body for the construction of national core-group or national core solidarity of the community have brought. The core arguments of the dissertation are associated with analysis of the reprezentation of the body, the DNA, the genom in the connecting with the legitimization of ethnic or national bordelines identification
