René Barjavel's Pessimistic Novels

Abstract:

This Diploma Thesis is concerned with the pessimistic perception of the world of a 20th century French author René Barjavel as depicted in his science-fiction novels Ravage, Le Voyageur imprudent, Colomb de la Lune and La Nuit des temps. The reason for choosing these works of René Barjavel was their common thematics and genre characteristics. The author of the thesis attempted as well to choose the novels which were published in different periods of Barjavel’s life so that the analysis could be representative of his entire artistic creation. Not only that the tone of these novels is pessimistic, but also they make the reader realize the vanity of the human existence and make him feel desperate, hopeless and lost. This led to the analysis of several factors which are supposed to be the cause of such an effect on the reader. To confirm Barjavel’s negative attitude, the reasons and the means of projecting the pessimism in his novels, the author of the Thesis analyzed different components of the texts, the titles of the novels, their genre and also different stages in the life of René Barjavel.

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá pesimistickým pohledem na svět francouzského autora XX. století, Reného Barjavela, a jeho promítnutím v autorových vědeckofantastických románech Ravage, Le voyageur imprudent, Colomb de la Lune a La Nuit des temps. Díla byla vybrána na základě společných žánrových a tematických rysů a zároveň tak, aby data jejich vydání byla od sebe více vzdálena, a knihy tak sloužily jako určitý vzorek Barjavelovy tvorby. Romány nejenže vyznívají pesimisticky, ale také ve čtenáři vzbuzují pocit marnosti, sklíčenosti, zoufalství, bezvýchodnosti a neutěšenosti, což nás vedlo k analýze nejrůznějších prvků, které tento dojem mohou vyvolávat. Abychom potvrdili Barjavelovu negativitu a důvody a způsoby promítnutí pesimismu do jeho románů, zkoumali jsme nejenom jednotlivé složky vlastních textů, ale také názvy knih, žánr a autorovy životní etapy.
