"Time-pressure paradox": new technologies and lack of time

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem této práce je představení a kritické zhodnocení a porovnání dvou ústředních teorií o sociálním zrychlení, které uvedli Hartmut Rosa a Judy Wajcman. Obě teorie popisují time pressure paradox, což znamená, že nás nové technologie dávají spíše pod větší časový pres, než aby nám nějaký ten čas ušetřily, což je původní záměr jejich vývoje. První část práce analyzuje a nastiňuje hlavní rysy a rozdíly obou teorií, týkající se přístupů k time pressure paradoxu. Rosova teorie přistupuje k tomuto fenoménu spíše z makrosociologického hlediska a více globální perspektivy, zatímco Wajcman k němu přistupuje z mikrosociologického hlediska a porovnává subjektivní prožitky individuálních lidí a sociálních skupin. Druhá část pak dále rozvíjí nějaké z hlavních myšlenek, řečených u obou teorií, tak jako volný čas, multitasking, trávení času s dětmi, nebo technologie. Část o moderních technologiích a jak ovlivňují naše životy a prožitky času, je pak doplněna o pohled na tento problém od americké sociální vědkyně Sherry Turkle.

Abstract:

The main aim of the thesis is an introduction and a critical comparison of two contemporary major theories of social acceleration developed by Hartmut Rosa and Judy Wajcman, respectively. Both of these theories describe the "time-pressure paradox", i.e. the fact that new technologies actually put us under more time pressure, rather than creating space for more free time which is the original purpose behind their development. The first part of the thesis analyses and outlines the distinctive features of and the differences between the two theories regarding their respective approaches towards the paradox. It is concluded that Rosa's theory approaches the phenomenon from a macrosociological and more global perspective, while Wajcman develops a microsociological treatment of the phenomenon by comparing subjective experiences thereof of diverse individual persons and social groups. The second part then further develops some of the main thoughts from the two theories, such as free time, multitasking, spending time with children, or technologies. The part about technologies and how they influence our life and time-experience is supplemented with a view of the problem developed by an American social scientist Sherry Turkle.
