Molecular beam deposition of thin films of organic semiconductors and the structure of the films

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje studiu depozice tenkých vrstev organických polovodičů na křemíkové substráty a studiu jejich struktury. Zkoumanými organickými polovodiči byly chrysen (1,2-Benzphenanthren), PTCDA (3,4,9,10-Perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydrid) a deriváty molekuly DNTT (Dinaphtho [2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophen). Růst vrstev probíhal v ultra-vysokém vakuu metodou depozice molekulárním svazkem na aparaturách na univerzitě v Tübingenu a laboratoří v CEITEC Nano Core Facility v Brně. Úspěšně nanesené vrstvy byly charakterizovány pomocí rentgenové reflektivity a difrakce pod malým úhlem dopadu (Masarykova univerzita, ústav fyziky kondenzovaných látek) a byly určeny tloušťky narostlých vrstev, závislost molekulární hustoty a povrchové drsnosti na tloušťce vrstev. Značná část práce se zaměřuje na posuny difrakčních píků v závislosti na tloušťce nanesené vrstvy. V rámci charakterizace byly dále určeny mezirovinné vzdálenosti, mřížové parametry elementrárních buněk molekulárních krystalů a objemy elementárních buněk. V případě derivátů DNTT s postraními řetězci (s alkylovou skupinou C8H17 v případě C8DNTT a fenylovou skupinou v případě diPhDNTT) byly v rentgenové reflektivitě pozorovány opačné směry posunu difrakčních maxim 001 a 002 s rostoucí tloušťkou vrstev, což naznačuje vznik dvou různých fází. Mřížkové konstanty těchto dvou fází se však k sobě s rostoucí tloušťkou vrstvy přibližují. U tlustšího vzorku C0DNTT měření difrakce pod malým úhlem dopadu při různých hloubkách vniku rentgenového záření naznačuje nárůst mezirovinných vzdáleností ve směru rovnoběžném s povrchem podél osy od povrchu k substrátu. Z principu měření však nelze tento efekt měřit přímo. Nezávislými metodami zjištěné tendence poklesu objemu elementární buňky C0DNTT a nárustu molekulární hustoty s rostoucí tloušťkou vrstvy si navzájem odpovídají.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the deposition of thin films of organic semiconductors on silicon substrates and their structure characterization. The studied organic semiconductors were chrysene (1,2-Benzphenanthrene), PTCDA (3,4,9,10-Perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) and derivatives of DNTT (Dinaphtho [2,3-b:2',3'-f]thieno[3,2-b]thiophene). The growth of the thin films was done in ultra-high vacuum via the molecular beam deposition at the University of Tübingen (Germany) and at CEITEC Nano Core Facility in Brno. The successfully grown thin films were characterized with X-ray reflectivity and grazing incidence X-ray diffraction (Masaryk University, Department of Condensed Matter Physics) and the film thickness, molecular density and roughness of the grown films were identified. Furthermore, the lattice spacings, unit cell parameters and volumes of unit cells were determined for studied crystalline samples. In case of DNTT derivatives with side chains, i.e. with alkil group C8H17 in case of C8DNTT and a phenyl group in case of diPhDNTT we observe opposing shifts of the 001 and 002 reflections in the X-ray reflectivity, which implies formation of two different phases. For thick C0DNTT sample, the grazing incidence X-ray diffraction measurements at various penetration depths of the X-ray radiation imply increasing in-plane lattice spacing in the direction from top of the film towards the substrate. However, from the principle of the measurement this effect can not be measured directly. For C0DNTT the tendencies of decreasing unit cell volume and of increasing molecular density with increasing film thickness, determined by independent methods, complement with each other.
