The relationship between attachment, physical attractiveness and loneliness in emerging adulthood

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo zmapovat souvislosti mezi citovou vazbou, fyzickou atraktivitou a pocity osamělosti v období vynořující se dospělosti. Data byla získána formou online dotazníku, výzkumný soubor tvořilo 441 respondentů (323 žen a 118 mužů) ve věku 18 – 25 let. K získání dat byl použit Dotazník struktury vztahů (ECR - RS), Škála odhadu fyzické atraktivity (EPAS) a Škála osamělosti (UCLA, Verze 3). K analýze dat byla použita analýza rozptylu a mnohonásobná hierarchická regrese. Výsledky potvrdily středně silný vztah mezi osamělostí a dimenzemi citové vazby i subjektivně vnímanou fyzickou atraktivitou. Signifikantní rozdíly byly prokázány mezi muži a ženami u celkové míry vyhýbavosti, u respondentů s rozvedenými a nerozvedenými rodiči u obou dimenzí citové vazby, a mezi zadanými a nezadanými jedinci v míře pociťované osamělosti. Výsledky regresního modelu ukázaly, že míra vyhýbavosti a úzkostnosti ve vztazích spolu se subjektivně vnímanou fyzickou atraktivitou jsou významnými prediktory výskytu pocitu osamělosti. Nejsilnějším prediktorem byla v tomto modelu celková míra vyhýbavosti ve vztazích. V druhém regresním modelu, zaměřeném na jednotlivé vztahy s matkou, otcem, partnerem a přítelem, byly signifikantními prediktory pocitu osamělosti míra vyhýbavosti k otci, k partnerovi a k nejlepšímu příteli. Závěry jsou diskutovány v kontextu předcházejících zjištění a teorie spolu s limity studie a náměty pro další výzkumy.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis was to explore the relationship between attachment, physical attractiveness and feeling of loneliness in emerging adulthood. The data were collected through an online questionnaire, the sample consisted of 441 respondents (323 women and 118 men) in the age rating between 18 and 25 years. We used The Experiences in Close Relationships – The Relationships Structures Questionnaire (ECR – RS), The Estimating Physical Attractiveness Scale (EPAS) and UCLA Loneliness Scale (Version 3) for collecting the data. The analysis method was analysis of variance and multiple hierarchical regression. The results bring the evidence of medium strength relations between loneliness and attachment dimensions as well with subjectively perceived physical attractiveness. There were significant differences among men and women in attachment avoidance, among respondents with divorced and undivorced parents in both attachment dimensions, and among single individuals and those, who have a partner, in feeling of loneliness. Results of multiple regression analyses indicated that attachment avoidance and anxiety along with subjectively perceived physical attractiveness are significant predictors of loneliness. The best predictor in this regression model was attachment avoidance. Second regression model, focused on individual relationship with mother, father, partner and the best friend, were significant predictors attachment avoidance to father, partner and to the best friend. The conclusions are discussed in context of previous findings and theory together with the limitations and future research implications.
