Situation aspect in Japanese and the role of transitivity

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce má za cíl zjistit, proč mívají v japonštině nepřechodná slovesa v konstrukci [V-te iru] interpretaci výsledného stavu, zatímco jejich přechodné protějšky interpretaci průběhu akce. K tomu byla jako teoretický rámec zvolena dvousložková teorie aspektu Carloty S. Smith(ové). V práci jsou nejprve českému čtenáři představeny dva klíčové proudy výzkumu aspektu v japonské jazykově-dě, reprezentované Kindaičim Haruhikem (1950) a Okudou Jasuem (1978). Zatímco Kindaiči klasifikuje slovesa do čtyř tříd na základě jejich kombinovatelnosti s konstrukcí [V-te iru] a jejich případné interpretace v této konstrukci, Okuda hledá rozdíl mezi slovesy trvání a slovesy výsledku v tom, zda jejich podmět plní roli agentu či patientu. Tyto dva přístupy jsou v práci konfrontovány s dvousložkovou teorií aspektu, která rozlišuje mezi aspektem hlediska a aspektem situačním a všímá si jejich interakce. Ukazuje se, že intranzitivní slovesa s rezultativní interpretací v konstrukci [V-te iru] a jejich tranzitivní protějšky s interpretací průběhovou mají zřejmě společnou dynamičnost a teličnost, ale liší se v délce trvání děje. To má patrně kognitivní vysvětlení v tom, že je-li v situaci explicitně přítomný agens, všímá si mluvčí kromě výsledku děje také činnosti agentu, jež k tomuto výsledku vedla. Poslední část práce se věnuje ověřování hypotézy, že nepřechodná slovesa s rezultativní interpretací skutečně vyjadřují okamžitý děj. To je provedeno na da-tech z paralelního korpusu InterCorp prostřednictvím výrazů jukkuri »pomalu«, V-owaru »přestat (dělat)«, V-kakeru »začít (dělat), ale nedokončit« a V-cuzukeru »dál (dělat)«, které odkazují na trvání, a neměly by se tedy s okamžitými situacemi pojit. Výsledky ukazují, že se výrazy odkazující na trvání děje s rezultativními nepřechodnými slovesy pojí velmi zřídka a většinou se jedná o situaci se specifickým časovým průběhem.

Abstract:

The aim of the present bachelor’s thesis is to find out why Japanese intransitive verbs in the [V-te iru] construction tend to obtain a resulting state reading, while their transitive counterparts an action in progress reading. To this end the two-component theory of aspect developed by Carlota S. Smith has been chosen as the theoretical framework. First, the reader is introduced to two key paths of research into aspect in Japanese linguistics, represented by Kindaichi Haruhiko (1950) and Okuda Yasuo (1978). Whereas Kindaichi classifies verbs into four classes on the ba-sis of their acceptability in the [V-te iru] construction and their interpretation in the construction, Okuda attributes the difference between continuation verbs and result verbs to whether their subject plays the role of the agent or the patient. These two approaches are confronted with the two-component theory of aspect, which distin-guishes between viewpoint aspect and situation aspect while observing their inter-action. As it turns out, what intransitive verbs with a resultative reading in the [V-te iru] construction and their transitive counterparts with a progressive reading have in common is dynamism and telicity, but they differ in duration. This seems to stem from cognition, in that if there is an agent explicitly present in the situation, the speaker perceives not just the result of the event, but also the agent’s activity lead-ing to the result. The final part of the thesis is devoted to verifying the hypothesis that intransitive verbs with a resultative interpretation indeed pertain to instantane-ous events. This is done with the use of data from the parallel corpus InterCorp looking at expressions such as yukkuri ‘slowly’, V-owaru ‘to stop (doing)’, V-kakeru ‘to start (doing) without finishing’, and V-tsuzukeru ‘to continue (doing)’, all of which relate to duration, thus being incompatible with instantaneous events. The results show that such expressions combine with resultative intransitive verbs very rarely and if so, the situation is usually of a specific temporal duration.
