Recommendations for implementing DevOps in the internal development of a banking institution

Abstract:

V IT oddělení bankovní instituce dochází k celkové transformaci a navýšení pracovních pozic. Interní vývojový tým spatřuje nedostatky především v provozní části vyvíjených aplikací. Vzhledem k aktuálním trendům a vzestupu DevOps si práce klade za cíl stanovit doporučení pro zavedení DevOps v rámci interního vývoje bankovní instituce. K dosažení hlavního cíle jsou stanoveny tři dílčí cíle: analyzovat současný stav fungování vývojového týmu, identifikovat nedostatky současného fungování a provést validaci doporučení s vedoucím a členy týmu. K analýze současného stavu je použita metoda nestrukturovaných rozhovorů. K identifikaci nedostatků je použita metoda porovnání, a to porovnání současného stavu s podněty získanými z odlišných přístupů fungování, které je vhodné v dané části zohlednit. Sestavení doporučení je dosaženo rešerší klíčových praktik a zkušeností DevOps a následné aplikaci pro potřeby týmu dle identifikovaných nedostatků. Validace souboru doporučení je provedena formou rozhovorů s vedoucím a členy týmu. Získaná zpětná vazba slouží jako výstup a zhodnocení. Doporučení týkající se týmové komunikace a sdílení informací byla vedoucím týmu shledána jako velmi užitečná a rád by je implementoval, i přestože by v rámci společnosti nebyl DevOps zaveden.

Abstract:

The IT department of the banking institution is undergoing a complete transformation and an increase in job positions. The internal development team sees weaknesses mainly in the operations part of the developed applications. Considering the current trends and the rise of DevOps, the thesis aims to establish recommendations for implementing DevOps within the internal development of a banking institution. In order to achieve the main objective, three sub-objectives are set: to analyze the current state of the development team, to identify the gaps in the current functioning, and to conduct a validation of the recommendations with the team leader and team members. Unstructured interview method is used to analyze the current state. To identify the gaps, the method of comparison is used, namely comparing the current state with the suggestions obtained from the different approaches of functioning that should be considered in this section. The construction of recommendations is achieved by researching key DevOps practices and experiences and then applying them to the needs of the team according to the identified gaps. Validation of the set of recommendations is done through interviews with the team leader and team members. The feedback obtained serves as output and evaluation. The recommendations regarding team communication and information sharing were found very useful by the team leader and he would like to implement them even if DevOps is not implemented within the company.
