Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce analyzuje význam a použití termínu „realismus“ pro umění 20. století skrze specifické zaměření se na tvorbu umělce Francise Bacona. Cílem je prozkoumat možné rozpory spojené s pojetím „realistické“ malby; a skrze pochopení toho jak a proč byla Baconova tvorba opakovaně nepochopena rozvinout možný širší náhled na realismus, který přesněji zahrnuje složitost umění, které není doslovně znázorňující ani abstraktní. Práce poukazuje na linii nedůsledného kritického přístupu k osobě a dílu malíře Francise Bacona. Je patrný neustálý proud extrémních a negativních reakcí u kritiků, jak během Baconova života, tak i dnes, což je v rozporu s jeho postavením inovativního a důležitého umělce. Z tohoto důvodu je nutné vlastní přehodnocení, které zahrne bližší pohled na problematické vnímání Baconových obrazů a vysvětlení reakcí kritiků na obrazy. Bude zřejmé, že je třeba změnit přístup k Baconovým obrazům v kontextu umění a kritiky ve 20. století. Plnější ocenění jeho tvorby bude vyžadovat přeladění divákova „mentálního nastavení“ – jeho dosavadní zkušenosti a očekávání. Klíčem k tomuto přeladění by mohl být koncept realismu, tak jak ho chápali Bacon a Leiris, kdy realismus nezávisí na formálním provedení malby, ale na emocionálním účinku na diváka; kdy vnímané emoce odkazují k člověkem přímo zakoušeným zkušenostem z reálného života. Na základě této analýzy práce navrhuje přístup k Baconovým dílům, který se soustředí na intuitivní, tělesný aspekt obrazů a vztahů mezi intenzivně subjektivním dojmem a celkovým významem díla; navrhuje možný popis jeho díla jako „emocionální realismus“.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis is an analysis of the use and meanings of the term ‘realism’ in 20th century art through the specific focus of the work of the artist Francis Bacon. It aims to investigate the potential contradictions inherent in the concept of painting ‘realistically’ and, through an understanding of how and why Bacon’s work has been regularly misperceived, to develop a possible broader perspective on realism that embraces more accurately the complexity of art that is not either specifically representational or abstract. The thesis points out a pattern of inconsistent critical approaches to the person and work of the painter Francis Bacon. There is a constant output of extreme and negative reactions from critics, both during his life and now, which contradicts his status as an innovative and important artist, and this points to the necessity for a reappraisal involving a closer focus on the problematic perception of Bacon`s paintings, as well as an explanation for the critics’ understanding of his work. It will be evident that there is a need for change in the approach to Bacon`s work in the context of 20th century art and criticism, involving the need for a re-tuning of the viewer`s mental set - his present experience and expectations - for a fuller appreciation of Bacon`s ouevre. The key to this re-tuning could be a concept of realism as understood by Bacon and Leiris where realism does not depend on the formal side of painting but on the emotional impact on the viewer; where the intensity of the emotions experienced from the painting communicate the eternal human emotions concerned with the real world. Finally, from this analysis the thesis proposes an approach to his work that concentrates on the intuitive, visceral aspect of the paintings and the relationship between the intensely subjective impact and the overall meaning of the work: proposing a possible description of the work as ‘emotional realism’.
