Intercultural communication: Expressing irony in political debates

Abstract:

This Master's thesis deals with political discourse in its most tense and natural form - live debate, and a drama-adding figure of speech, irony. The theoretical part of the paper looks at the language used by politicians from the point of view of language pragmatics. It focuses on irony, as well as the specifics of political discourse used in media, in this case televised political debates. The aim of the thesis is to distinguish whether there are any cultural differences in the use of irony during political debates - the empirical part presents an analysis of two debates from the most recent presidential elections in the Czech Republic and the United States. Based on the results of the qualitative analysis of the selected political discourse sample, it was found that irony is used in politics of both countries in a similar way.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá politickým diskurzem v jeho nejryzejší podobě živé debaty a využitím ironie, řečnické formy plné dvojsmyslu. Teoretická část této práce představuje z pragmatického hlediska jazyk, který je typicky užívaný v politickém prostředí a zároveň zkoumá verbální ironii, část je také věnována specifikům politického diskurzu v médiích. Cílem této práce je zjistit, zdali se projevují kulturní rozdíly v použití ironie během politických debat - analýza provedená v rámci této práce srovnává finální debaty doposud posledních prezidentských voleb v USA a České republice, které nesly několik společných znaků. Na základě provedení kvalitativní analýzy bylo zjištěno, že v rámci vybraného vzorku politického diskurzu je ironie v politice používána napříč oběma kulturami.
