Between-population variability in size and shape of handprints: implications for sex estimation of Paleolithic artists

Abstract:

Cílem práce je dokumentovat míru mezipopulační variability ve tvaru a velikosti otisků ruky u dvou současných populací, následně ověřit spolehlivost metody odhadu pohlaví vytvořené na jedné populaci při použití na druhou populaci a na závěr diskutovat důsledky pro odhad pohlaví tvůrců paleolitického umění. Měli jsme k dispozici otisky rukou ze současné české a francouzské populace s rovným zastoupením obou pohlaví. U každého probanda (z francouzské i české populace) jsme měli k dispozici údaje o populační afinitě, pohlaví, věku, stranové preferenci ruky, výšce postavy a hmotnosti. Pomocí kopírky jsme snímali otisky levé i pravé ruky každého probanda. U každého otisku ruky jsme měřili šest lineárních rozměrů (délku a šířku otisků ruky a délky otisků druhého až pátého prstu). Míru projevu pohlavního dimorfizmu jsme hodnotili vnitropopulačně porovnáním parametrů proměnných mezi skupinami mužů a žen uvnitř obou souborů i mezipopulačně mezi skupinami českých a francouzských žen a mezi českými a francouzskými muži. Zdokumentováním míry variability ve velikosti otisků rukou na dvou nezávislých souborech ze současné populace pomocí otisků obou rukou stovky českých a stovky francouzských studentů, jsme dokázali sestavit šest diskriminačních funkcí pro odhad pohlaví, jež dovedly (po křížové validaci) správně klasifikovat v nejlepším případě 93 % jedinců, v nejhorším 85 %, a to s posteriorní pravděpodobností (PP) větší než 0,5. Míra mezipohlavní odchylky správné klasifikace dosahovala maximálně 10 %. Spolehlivost vytvořených diskriminačních funkcí jsme ověřili vždy na druhém souboru, než na kterém byly vytvořeny. Co se týče velikosti otisků rukou, skupiny mužů a žen se od sebe v rámci jednotlivých souborů statisticky významně liší. Pozorovaný pohlavní dimorfizmus se však neprojevuje do takové míry, aby bylo možné spolehlivě tento jev využít k diskriminaci pohlaví napříč odlišnými populacemi. Vzhledem k výrazné populační specificitě velikosti otisků rukou, kterou jsme pozorovali prostřednictvím výsledků naší práce, nemůžeme použití takovýchto diskriminačních funkcí přesvědčivě doporučit ani k odhadu pohlaví z otisků rukou paleolitických umělců.

Abstract:

The aim of the dissertation is to document the level of between-population variability in handprints shape and size of two recent populations, subsequently verify reliability of sex estimation method that was formed on one population and applied on the other one and finally discuss the implications for sex guess of Paleolithic artists. We had available the handprints of contemporary Czech and French populations with equal representation of both sexes. Each proband (the French and Czech population) population affinity, sex, age, lateral preference hand, body height and weight data were available. Using a copier, we scanned the left and right handprints of each proband. We measured six linear dimensions of each handprint (length and width of handprints and fingerprints length of the second, third, fourth and the fifth finger). Level of manifestation of sex dimorphism was evaluated intrapopulation comparing the variable parameters between the groups of men and women within both files and interpopulation between groups of Czech and French women and between Czech and French men. We managed, by documenting the level of variability in size handprints performed on two independent sets of handprints of both hands of hundred of Czech and hundred of French students of current population, to define six discriminant functions assessing the sex, which enable to (after cross validation) correctly classify at the best 93% individuals in the worst 85%, with a posterior probability (PP) greater than 0.5. The level of variance of correct sex classification reach maximum 10%. Reliability of created discriminant functions was verified on the other file than the one they were created for. Regarding the size handprints, the groups of men and women in each individual file shows statistically significant difference. However the observed sex dimorphism was not shown to the extent that it is possible to use this phenomenon to differentiate sexes across different populations reliably. Given the considerable population specificity of handprints size, we observed through the results of our work, we can not recommend to use such diskriminant functions to estimate the sex of Palaeolithic artists convincingly.
