Geochemistry of coffinite from different types of uranium mineralization at the Rožná deposit

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo objasnit vzájemné texturní a chemické vztahy uraninit-coffinitové mineralizace na ložisku Rožná. BSE snímky a distribuční prvkové mapy ukázaly, že se ve studovaných vzorcích nachází dva rozdílné genetické typy coffinitu. První charakterizovaný typ coffinitu představuje primární coffinit vznikající krystalizací z hydrotermálních fluid bohatých na U, Si a částečně Zr. Primární coffinit je typický svou oscilační zonálností a porézností. Zatímco druhý typ odpovídá sekundárnímu coffinitu, který nahrazoval původní uraninit a vytváří značně heterogenní agregáty. Primární a sekundární coffinit se odlišují nejenom texturně, ale i chemickým složením. Sekundární coffinit se vyznačuje nehomogenní distribucí prvků Zr a Pb reflektující proměnlivou intenzitu coffinitizace, zatímco primární coffinit je charakterizován výraznou chemickou zonálností viditelnou v distribučních prvkových mapách. Analýzy na elektronové mikrosondě společně s distribučními prvkovými mapami ukázaly, že proces coffinitizace vede k odnosu PbO, naopak při zvyšující se intenzitě coffinitizace dochází zároveň i k nárůstu ZrO2. Naměřené homogenní koncentrace CaO v obou texturních typech coffinitu pravděpodobně odráží přítomnost prvku během počáteční krystalizace.

Abstract:

The objective of this thesis was to clarify the mutual textural and chemical relations of uraninite-coffinite mineralization at the Rožná deposit. BSE images and EMP elemental distribution maps confirmed presence of two distinct genetic types of coffinite in the studied samples. The first type represents primary coffinite formed by crystallization from hydrothermal fluids enriched in U, Si and partially Zr. Primary coffinite is characterized by oscillatory zonation and high porosity. The second type corresponds to secondary coffinite, which replaced the original uraninite and is represented by heterogeneous aggregates. Primary and secondary coffinite differ not only texturally, but also in chemical composition. Secondary coffinite is characterized by an heterogenous distribution of Zr and Pb, reflecting variable intensity of coffinitization, whereas primary coffinite is characterized by noticeable chemical zonation. EMP analysis together with elemental distribution maps showed that the process of coffinitization typically leads to PbO loss. With the increasing intensity of coffinitization the concentrations of ZrO2 usually increase as well. The relatively uniform concentrations of CaO in both textural types of coffinite probably reflect the incorporation of CaO during initial crystallization.
