Parallels in the historical, cultural and social evolution of the Russian banya and the Finnish sauna

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor’s thesis, which bears the title "Parallels in the historical, cultural and social evolution of the Russian banya and the Finnish sauna", is to compare the East Slavic type of steam bath with the Finno-Ugric one. The Russian banya and the Finnish sauna are contrasted in the individual parts of the thesis from the point of view of their physical conditions, traditional log cabin structure, practices and customs associated with the steam bath, as well as from the aspect of their historical evolution and significance for the society. The thesis also reveals parallels in the magical and ritual role of the banyas and saunas, which in the past served as sanctuaries for the life cycle rituals. The linguistic part of the thesis includes a Russian-Slovak glossary containing an explanation of the key Russian words used in the paper along with a list of idioms with the component "banya".

Abstract:

Hlavnou myšlienkou tejto bakalárskej diplomovej práce, ktorá nesie názov "Paralely v historickom, kultúrnom a spoločenskom vývoji ruskej bane a fínskej sauny", je porovnanie východoslovanského typu parného kúpeľa s ugrofínskym. Ruská baňa a fínska sauna sú v jednotlivých častiach práce konfrontované z pohľadu ich fyzikálnych pomerov, štruktúry tradičného zrubu, zaužívaných postupov a zvykov spojených s návštevou parného kúpeľa, ako aj zo stránky ich historického vývoja a postavenia v spoločnosti. Práca tiež odhaľuje paralely v magickej a obradovej úlohe baní a sáun, ktoré v minulosti slúžili ako miesta pre pohanské obrady životného cyklu. Lingvistickú zložku práce tvorí rusko-slovenský glosár obsahujúci výklad kľúčových ruských slov použitých v práci spolu so zoznamom frazeologizmov s komponentom "banja".
