Czech Translations of ''Dracula'' by Bram Stoker

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá komparativní analýzou tří českých překladů gotického románu Dracula od Brama Stokera. Prvním překladem, kterým se zabývá, je vůbec nejstarší existující český překlad tohoto románu z roku 1919 od J. F. Khuna. Druhým porovnávaným překladem je česká verze vypracovaná Tomášem Korbařem v roce 1970. Posledním analyzovaným textem je v současnosti nejnovější překlad z roku 2018, za kterým stojí Tomáš Novotný. Práce se skládá ze dvou částí. V první, teoretické části se zabývá procesem překladu se zaměřením na pochopení a interpretaci předlohy, nepoměr jazyků a dobové tendence českých překladatelů. V druhé, praktické části se práce zabývá porovnáním jednotlivých překladů s originálním románem a analyzuje jejich lexikální a syntaktické odlišnosti. Cílem je posoudit různá pojetí a věrnost jednotlivých překladů v dobovém kontextu, s ohledem na vývoj cílového jazyka a obecnou znalost reálií, kontextu a upířího fenoménu v cílové skupině čtenářů.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with the comparative analysis of three Czech translations of the gothic novel Dracula by Bram Stoker. The first analyzed text is the oldest existing Czech translation of the novel published in 1919 by J. F. Khun. The second Czech publication is by Tomáš Korbař in 1970. The final analyzed text is currently the most recent translation realized in 2018 by Tomáš Novotný. The thesis is composed of two parts. The first theoretical part deals with the process of translation. It focuses on both the understanding and interpretation of the original text, the inequality of languages, and language patterns of Czech translators. The second part is focused on the comparison of translated texts with the original novel and the analysis of their lexical and syntactical differences. The goal of this paper is to compare various understandings and adequacies of each translation in the historical context with a focus on the evolution of the Czech language, knowledge of context, and vampire phenomena.
