The accuracy of first impression formation in relation to different academic disciplines

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo ověřit souvislost akademického vzdělání s přesností formování prvního dojmu o druhé osobě. Do výzkumu se zapojilo celkem 108 studentů tří studijních zaměření: první část tvořili studenti psychologie, další pak studenti přírodovědných a technických oborů. Jejich úkolem bylo posoudit a předpovědět chování šesti prezentujících osob. Analýza dat potvrdila, že studenti odlišného studijního zaměření dosahují stejné úrovně přesnosti při formování prvního dojmu o druhé osobě, tudíž žádný ze studijních oborů nebyl v předpovědích úspěšnější než zbylé dva. Práce rovněž potvrzuje, že k přesnějším předpovědím pozorovatelů přispívá typ sebeprezentace, neboť statisticky významné rozdíly byly zjištěny u dvou ze šesti sebeprezentací. Předložená práce je sumarizujícím přehledem teorií a nabízí i souhrn zahraniční literatury a článků. V úvodu teoretické části je představen širší rámec sociálního poznávání, na který navazuje přehled nejčastěji uváděných modelů a přístupů k formování prvního dojmu, následně i faktory pozorovatelů a posuzovaných osob, které vstupují do procesu formování prvního dojmu. Teoretická část je uzavřena kapitolou o přesnosti v sociální percepci.

Abstract:

The aim of the present thesis was to examine the relationship between area of study and the accuracy of first impression formed of target person. The research sample consisted of 108 university students (social perceivers) of different academic disciplines: students of psychology, natural science and engineering disciplines that were supposed to make predictions about six target person´s behavior. Data analysis confirmed that the same level of accuracy was achieved by students regardless of their study orientation. Neither of the study groups formed more accurate predictions about a set of target persons than the other two. Another important finding resulting from this thesis is that specific type of self-presentation improves the accuracy with which perceivers judge the target person, significant differences were detected in two of the six self-presentations. The present work is an overview of theories and offers a summary of foreign literature and articles as well. In the introduction to the theoretical part there is presented a broader framework of social perception, which is followed by the most frequently reported models and approaches to the formation of first impressions, subsequently by factors underlying perceivers and target persons that enter into the process of first impression formation. The theoretical part is concluded by a chapter on accuracy in social perception.
