The Motivation of Addictive Substance Users to Withdrawal or Relapse

Abstract:

Diplomová práce s názvem ?Motivace uživatelů návykových látek k abstinenci nebo relapsu? je zcela aktuálním tématem pro dnešní moderní dobu a jeho výběr souvisel i s mojí několikaletou pracovní zkušeností s klienty závislými na alkoholu a drogách. Teoretická část celé předložené práce je konstruována do čtyř kapitol pojednávajících o návykových látkách a drogové závislosti, o motivaci a poslední kapitola je pojata z hlediska příčinné spojitosti mezi drogou/alkoholem a motivací. Vztah vzájemných souvislostí mezi motivací a drogovou závislostí je doplněn v teoretické části o poznatky obecných modelů vzniku závislostního chování a definice pojmů souvisejících s drogou a alkoholem. Dále je teorie věnována zdravotním, sociokulturním a ekonomickým komplikacím, které jsou charakteristické a zjevné pro jakékoliv zneužívání návykových látek včetně alkoholu. V neposlední řadě je pak význam kladen na abstinenci, relaps a craving. Výzkumná část probíhala za pomoci kvantitativní metody dotazníkového šetření a bylo stanoveno několik cílů. Hlavní cíl se snažil objasnit motivační faktory, jež vedou uživatele návykových látek k abstinenci, a tedy vyhledání lékařské pomoci, a následně i důvody vedoucí ony abstinující závislé k případnému relapsu. Skrze dílčí cíle pak práce zjišťuje četnost zastoupení jednotlivých klientů, a to jak z hlediska typu závislosti, tak i z aspektu gender, průměrnou délku abstinence či obecnou touhu respondentů po celoživotní abstinenci. Dále je výzkum věnován sebevražedné problematice a míře zastoupení jednotlivých faktorů ovlivňujících abstinenci, jakož i vztahu relapsu ke cravingu. Pro zjištění všech jmenovaných výzkumných cílů byl použit dotazník vlastní konstrukce předložený 86 respondentům hospitalizovaných na půdě psychiatrické léčebny, kdy proměnnými bylo pohlaví a typ závislosti.

Abstract:

This thesis called ?The motivation of addictive substance users to abstinence or relapse? is a very up-to-date topic for today's modern age and I chose it, because it is connected to my work experience with clients addicted to alcohol and drugs. The theoretical part of presented thesis consists of four chapters dealing with addictive substances and drug addiction, with motivation and the last chapter focuses on causal connection between drug/alcohol and motivation. The relation of mutual connections between motivation and drug addiction is in the theoretical part supplemented with general model information about formation of addictive behavior and definitions of concepts related to the drug and alcohol. The theory also engages in health, sociocultural and economical complications, which are typical and obvious for any abuse of addictive substances, including alcohol. Last but not least, big importance lays also on the abstinence, relapse and craving. In the research part, there was used a quantitative method of a questionnaire investigation and several aims were established. The main aim was to clarify the motivational factors guiding addictive substance users to abstinence and ergo finding medical help, as well as finding reasons guiding the abstinent addicts to possible relapse. Through subordinate aims the research part finds out the representation frequency of individual clients, from the point of view either of an addiction type or of a gender aspect, average length of abstinence or general desire of respondents to lifelong abstinence. Furthermore, the research is devoted to the problems of suicidal behavior and the extent of representation of individual factors influencing abstinence as well as the relation of relapse to craving. During investigation of all the named research aims a questionnaire done by myself was used. It was presented to 86 respondents hospitalized in psychiatric hospital and the variables were gender and addiction type.
